Uniontown, Belle Vernon split section meet
The Belle Vernon boys defeated the visiting Red Raiders, while the Uniontown girls held off the Lady Leopards Wednesday night in Section 5-AA action.
The Leopards won 88-73, while the Lady Raiders defeated Belle Vernon, 94-75.
Elizabeth Klingensmith (200 IM, 2:50.33; 100 butterfly, 1:05.44) and Alexandra Meadows (100 freestyle, 1:00.23; 100 backstroke, 1:10.55) won individual events for the Lady Raiders (3-1, 6-3).
Alexandra Meadows, Sera Meadows, Klingensmith and Torie Miller won the 200 medley relay (2:11.43), and Christina Homer, Rachel VanNosdeln, Alexandra Meadows and Klingensmith finished first in the 400 freestyle relay (4:15.47).
Maxine Brandt (200 freestyle, 2:24.37), Gabby Kohr (50 freestyle, 26.88), Sarah Callaway (500 freestyle, 6:20.58), and Rachel Smith (100 breaststroke, 1:24.79) had first-place finishes for the Lady Leopards. The 200 freestyle relay also finished first with a time of 1:54.06.
Andrew Lynn (200 freestyle, 2:13.25), Jonathan Susick (200 IM, 2:32.82; 100 breaststroke, 1:15.37), Bill Owens (100 butterfly, 1:12.25), David Mosco (100 freestyle, 53.56), Tom Beerer (500 freestyle, 6:12.45), and Lincoln Mimidis (100 backstroke, 1:15.37) all won their individual events for Belle Vernon. The Leopards won the 200 medley relay in 2:14.15.
Jonathan Sharp (50 freestyle, 23.74, WPIAL qualifying time), 200 freestyle relay (1:43.69), and 400 freestyle relay (3:57.90) finished first Uniontown (2-2, 3-6).
Uniontown hosts Connellsville and Laurel Highlands on Monday, swims Laurel Highlands next Thursday, and then joins Laurel Highlands and Belle Vernon for the Section 5-AA meet next Friday at Elizabeth-Forward.
Girls basketball
The elation of the Laurel Highlands girls basketball team from Tuesday night’s win over Connellsville was erased Wednesday night when the Fillies’ playoff chances were dashed with a 67-43 Section 1-AAAA loss at Greater Latrobe.
The victory secures the fourth and final playoff berth for the Lady Wildcats, who improve to 7-6 in the section and 10-8 overall. Laurel Highlands slips to 4-9 in the section and 6-15 overall.
Latrobe grabbed the early lead and the Fillies just weren’t able to catch up. The Lady Wildcats led 19-5 after the first quarter, 31-18 at halftime and 51-27 after three quarters.
Haley Moreland led Laurel Highlands with 14, and Kristina Hudock added 12.
Taley Dunaway had game-scoring honors for Latrobe with 16 points. Madison Kollar finished with 14, and Racheal Kollar and Emma Womack both scored 11.
Laurel Highlands concludes the section schedule tonight at 7:45 p.m. with a varsity only game at Kiski Area.

The Seto sisters scored the final 16 points for Brownsville, leading the Lady Falcons to a 44-36 non-section win over visiting Albert Gallatin Wednesday night.
The sisters, Maris and Alie, both scored eight points in the final eight minutes to hold off any late charge by the Lady Colonials.
Brownsville (7-11) led 9-6, 18-12 and 28-21 at the quarter breaks.
Maris Seto led all scorers with 18 points.
“It was a good game. The girls really hustled well,” said Brownsville coach Greg Golembiewski.
Diamond Madison led Albert Gallatin (6-12) with 14 points. Taylor Spence added 13.
Brownsville hosts Waynesburg Central tonight and travels to Albert Gallatin on Friday.
Boys basketball
Belle Vernon defeated Albert Gallatin on Wednesday, 68-56, in non-section play at Albert Gallatin.
The Leopards led 14-13, 33-26, and 51-40 at the quarter breaks.
Jason Capco scored a game-high 28 points for Belle Vernon, while teammate Travis Snyder scored 18.
Albert Gallatin’s Christian Goletz scored a team-high 16 points, teammates Josh Zidek and Michael Lewis each added 13 points.
Albert Gallatin (7-12, 0-10) returns to Section 1-AAAA play today at Latrobe, while Belle Vernon (10-9, 4-7) returns to Section 4-AAA play Friday at Elizabeth Forward.
Wrestling
The Laurel Highlands wrestling squad picked up a 44-14 non-section victory over visiting Mount Pleasant Wednesday night.
Zeke Beatty (120) and Austin Saletrik (170) won by decision for the Mustangs. Brandon Isler (132) and Tony DeFazio (182) won by fall, and Frank Thorpe (145), Lucas Boyle (152), Brandon Crayton (195), and James Isler all won by forfeit.
