Friend 3rd in steeplechase

California University of Pa. sophomore Julie Friend finished third in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase Sunday at the USATF Junior Championships held at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.

The Uniontown graduate finished in 10:36.55, about one second behind Purdue’s Hope Schmelzle (10:35.19). New Hampshire’s Elinor Purrier finished first with a winning time of 10:24.46.
