Rohanna shoots even-par in first round

Robert Rohanna’s first round of golf north of the border in the PGA TOUR Canada wasn’t so bad Thursday afternoon after the Waynesburg native finished at even-par 71 in The Players Cup at Pine Ridge Golf Club.

Rohanna is playing in his first event on the PGA TOUR Canada with full-exempt status he holds on the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica with that tour on hiatus for the winter months.

Rohanna’s first hole at Pine Ridge Golf Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba, was not the start he would’ve designed with a bogey-4.

“No. 10 was the first hole of the day and I didn’t hit a terrible shot, it just ended up in a pretty difficult bunker shot,” Rohanna said via Facebook Messenger.

Rohanna recovered the shot with a birdie-3 on No. 13, but gave the stroke back with a bogey-6 on No. 15.

“I had to take an unplayable (lie), so a bogey wasn’t terrible,” explained Rohanna.

Rohanna finished the front nine birdie-birdie to go out in 1-under 35.

He opened the back nine on No. 1 as he had on No. 10 with a bogey-5 (after a 3-putt) to slide back to even par. His round rollercoastered in the middle holes with a birdie-4 on No. 4, a bogey-5 on No. 5, and a birdie-3 on No 6 to go back to 1-under.

“I actually had a good bogey on No. 5. I got up and down after hitting in the water,” said Rohanna.

Rohanna closed his round with a bogey-4 on No. 9 to come back in 1-over 37 to finish even-par 71.

“The ninth hole, my last hole, the hole was insane and my bogey wasn’t too bad,” said Rohanna. “No. 9 is just hard. It’s 245 (yards) uphill and the green is literally an upside down bowl.”

All in all, Rohanna wasn’t that displeased with his opening round.

“Yeah, not too bad. I played okay. I putted well besides one 3-putt,” said Rohanna. “I didn’t hit it that great off the tee, so I scrambled a lot. It was really windy today.

“I just need to cut out the penalty strokes and I’d be better off. I’m going to play the same as today. I putted well, so if I can keep that up that would help.”

American Erik Barnes holds the first round lead after shooting 8-under 63.
