CONNELLSVILLE — Uniontown manager Scott DeBerry was looking only for a win, but he got a whole lot more in Sunday’s 10-0 win over Plum in the Region 6 Tournament at Thomas E. Sankovich Field at Connellsville High School.

Pitchers Zach Uhazie and Luke Paul combined on an eight-inning no-hitter, as Uniontown advanced to a match-up at 1 p.m. today against Blackhawk in the winner’s bracket semifinals.

Offensively, Uniontown pounded out 16 hits to overcome a two-game sweep in the Fayette League championship series.

“This was a good bounce-back game for our guys,” DeBerry said. “We were ready to play today, no question about it. We came in hoping only to win and move on, but I was hoping we could do something like this.”

Dom Peroni was the offensive leader for Uniontown. He was 4-for-4 and drove in three runs, while Ted Sova doubled and tripled, Luke Wallace doubled and Zach Stashick, Tyler Dubovich and Troy Kifer had two hits each.

Uhazie earned the win with six no-hit innings. He struck out five and didn’t walk a batter. Paul came on in the seventh and struck out all six batters he retired, without walking even one.

The closest Plum came to scoring was in the eighth, when a runner reached on an error and a hit batsman put runners on first and third with two outs, but Paul got his sixth strikeout to end the inning with Uniontown ahead, 7-0. They scored three more in the bottom of the eighth to end the game, 10-0.

“We played good defense and, obviously, got good pitching,” DeBerry said after his team improved to 25-4. “That’s been the story of our year.”

Uniontown broke through with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Drew DeBerry led off with a single and scored on Sova’s triple to center field. Kifer walked and stole second before Stashick singled to right to put runners on the corners. Stashick stole second and scored, along with Kifer, on Peroni’s single to center. Giuseppe Schiano singled to right, with Peroni taking third. Peroni scored on a double-steal to make it 5-0.

“It was big to jump on them early like that,” Scott DeBerry said. “It definitely took some life out of Plum.”

Next up is Blackhawk, which beat Monroeville earlier Sunday.

“Blackhawk is definitely a solid team,” Scott DeBerry said. “They played for the WPIAL championship during the high school season.”

Blackhawk, however, is without its ace, Brendan McKay. The Louisville recruit is off to college already and unavailable.

“That evens it out a little bit,” Scott DeBerry said. “McKay is a one-in-a-lifetime talent.”

Reminded that his team was still playing in the winner’s bracket, DeBerry added, “We’d like to keep it that way, too.”
