Lustig, Manown finish in top 20 at Pa. Amateur
Bo Lustig slid a little bit and Kirby Manown III played just a little bit better Wednesday as both Belle Vernon graduates had top-20 finishes at the 114th Amateur Championship played at Penn State University’s Blue course.
Trent Karlik shot a final round 71 to finish first at 7-under 206. Arnold Cutrell was alone in second place at 3-under 210.
Lustig entered the third and final round at even-par 142, but had a tougher final 18 holes with a 4-over 75 for a three-round total of 4-over par 217 to finish in a three-way tie in 13th place.
Manown had his best round in the two-day tournament with a 1-over 72 to finish in a five-way tie for 16th place.
Lustig had a roller coaster start to his final round with a bogey-5, birdie-3, bogey-5, and bogey-4 to start out 2-over par. He settled down, finishing the front nine with a birdie-4 to go out in 1-over 36. He had bogeys on Nos. 13, 15 and 18 to come back in 3-over 38.
Manown opened with consecutive pars, but went bogey-5 and bogey-4 on the next two holes. He closed out the front nine with a bogey and birdie for a 2-over 38. Manown had a much stronger start on the back nine with par, birdie-3, par and birdie-3 to whittle his score to 4-over.
Manown then carded four straight pars before ending the championship with a bogey-5 on the final hole to shoot 1-under 34.
