Kalsey, Sowers win PAC track titles
Westminster’s Marissa Kalsey successfully defended her title in the pole vault and Waynesburg’s Megan Sowers finished first in the javelin last weekend in the two-day Presidents’ Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Westminster College.
Kalsey, a Waynesburg Central graduate, cleared 3.75 meters (12-3½) to lead the Lady Titans to a 1-2-3 finish with Cassidy Shepherd and Brooke Mancuso both clearing 3.40 meters (11-1¾) Shepherd also won an individual title in the long jump (16-8, 5.08m).
The Westminster vaulters are coached by Waynesburg Central graduate Bradi Rhoades.
Sowers, a Beth-Center graduate, won the javelin title with a throw of 36.16 meters (118-8). She also finished third in the shot put (35-10¾, 10.94m). Jefferson-Morgan graduate Amanda Hobe was third in the triple jump with a top effort of 10.25 meters (33-7½).
The Yellow Jackets’ Byrum Louco was named the Track MVP, as well as the Track & Field MVP. He won the 400 (48.87) and 400 hurdles (54.17), finished third in the 110 hurdles (15.96), and was fourth in the long jump (20-4½).
The Yellow Jacket women also had top-8 finishes from Kiana Weary (8, 400, 1:02.4), Melissa Poach (6, 800, 2:28.95), Bre Paul (8, 1,500, 5:09.36; 8, pole vault, 9-8), Breanne Prinkey (6, pole vault, 9-8), Megan Ferrick (5, 10,000, 41:56.41), Katherine Latimer (3, 3,000 steeplechase, 11:54.13), Jamie Piotrowski (6, 3,00 steeplechase, 12:25.27), Rebecca Rapp (6, discus, 114-10), and Joy Talbott-Oster (8, 3,000 steeplechase, 12:35.65). The 1,600 relay quartet of Weary, Paul, Poach and Piotrowski finished fifth with a time of 4:20.95.
Waynesburg’s Travis Schubert won the javelin with a throw of 52.98 meters (173-10). He was seventh in the shot put (42-1¼) and eighth in the discus (120-1).
The Yellow Jackets’ 1,600 relay team of Lorenzo Mikulin, Patrick Martin, Zakk DeCarlo and Louco finished first in 3:24.19.
The Waynesburg men had top-8 finishes from DeCarlo (6, 200, 22.64), Mikulin (4, 800, 1:58.93), Brandon Dugan (8, 800, 2:03.13), Brendan Keany (6, 1,500, 4:13.46), Benjamin McAuley (8, 1,500, 4:16.36), Jason Propst (3, high jump, 6-0), Josiah Sedlak (5, triple jump, 41-10), James Steele (7, triple jump, 40-5), Brandon Vantine (4, shot put, 43-8½; 8, javelin, 151-9), Trevor Watson (6, shot put, 42-9¾), Kurt Bonnet (2, discus, 135-9), and Aniello DeStefano (5, discus, 123-11).
