Rohanna on the bubble after first round
Rachel Rohanna was right on the cutline after the opening round of four Thursday in the Symetra Tour’s Self Regional Healthcare Foundation Women’s Classic held at Links at Stony Point in Greenwood, S.C.
The Waynesburg Central grad shot a 3-over 75 and sits tied for 61st entering today’s second round. The top 70 (and ties) advance to the third round.
“This is the only four-day tournament on the Symetra Tour. The purse is $200,000, almost double of most the purses,” said Rohanna.
Rohanna opened on No. 10 and went out in even-par 36. She had a birdie-3 on No. 11, her second hole, but gave the shot back with a bogey-5 on No. 14.
The course got away from her on her back nine a little with bogeys on Nos. 3, 4 and 9 to go out in 3-over 39.
“I had some bad shots, but I hit a lot of great shots,” said Rohanna. “I 3-putted two par-5s for par.”
Rohanna also said she had some fortuitous bounces in the round.
“I had some shots out there that were close to being in deep trouble,” explained Rohanna. “I hit a tree 50 yards off the tee box, it bounced out-of-bounds for two or three seconds and popped into the rough.
“Another hole, I cut it off too much, but it kicked back into the fairway. On one of the par-3s, I hit the rocks, but instead of bouncing back into the water the ball bounced to the back of the green.
“It all evened out.”
Rohanna is seven strokes behind co-leaders Sadena Park and Louise Friberg heading into today’s second round.
“I hate to put a number in my head,” Rohanna said of her outlook going into the second round. “I’m looking at 70. That would be great. I think a 72, 71 would move me into the weekend.
“I’d like to position myself into the weekend. I didn’t shoot myself out of it.”
Rohanna said the temperature was in the 90s, but she weathered the heat well.
“I felt great. It was really hot. I thought I’d be drained, but I actually went for a little run afterwards,” added Rohanna.
