Local track teams shut out
Local track teams ran into a stacked deck in Thursday’s WPIAL semifinals with no squad advancing into Monday’s finals.
The Hempfield girls earned a spot into the Class AAA championship with wins over Laurel Highlands (127-23), Canon-McMillan (103-47) and Thomas Jefferson (119-31). The Fillies lost to Canon-McMillan (111-39) and Thomas Jefferson (94-55). Marisa Deichert had the lone event victory for the Fillies in the 1,600.
The Canon-McMillan boys advanced to the Class AAA finals with wins over Laurel Highlands (107-43), Indiana (86-64) and Penn Hills (127-23). The Mustangs defeated Penn Hills (100-48) and lost to Indiana (88-62). Dontay Jacobs won the 200 and 400.
The California boys lost to South Side Beaver, 102-48. The Rams advanced to the Class AA finals with wins over Burgettstown (102-48) and Fort Cherry (97-53). The Trojans had top performances from Gavin Anderson (1, 100, 11.52; 1, 200, 23.7; 2, javelin, 136-10), Devan Peterman (3, 800, 2:11, school record; 2, 3,200, 11:10) and Cory Adams (3, shot put, 40-11).
The North Allegheny boys earned a spot in the Class AAA finals by defeating Uniontown (138-12), Franklin Regional (122-28), Knoch (119-31) and West Mifflin (122-28).
The Beaver boys advanced to the Class AA finals with wins over Southmoreland (127-23) and Apollo-Ridge (102.66-47.33).
The Beaver girls also advanced to the Class AA finals by defeating Southmoreland (107-43), Riverview (109½-40½) and Shenango (103-47). The South Fayette girls are also in the Class AA finals with wins over Waynesburg Central (127-23), McGuffey (111-39) and Quaker Valley (99½-50½).
