Records fall in Cal loss at Mercyhurst
Wide receiver Garry Brown and quarterback James Harris set California (Pa.) single-game school records in a 59-49 Vulcans loss at Mercyhurst Saturday.
Brown, a sophomore from Columbus, Ohio, caught eight passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns. He broke a record of 226 receiving yards set by Pete Gialames in 1968.
Brown was having a mundane day through three quarters, but caught his three touchdowns, covering 76, 75 and 47 yards, and caught a fourth pass in the fourth quarter to give him 242 yards receiving in the quarter.
Harris, a junior from Woodstock, Ga., passed for a school-record 473 yards. He completed 21 of 42 passes for four touchdowns and two interceptions. The previous record for passing yards in a game was 443, set by Kevin McCabe in the 2008 PSAC championship game.
The teams combined for 1,174 yards of total offense and ran 146 plays.
Cal’s defense featured 10-tackle efforts from Belle Vernon’s Spencer Lynn and Tyrone Taylor.
The Vulcans (7-3 overall, 6-2 in PSAC play) end the season next Saturday when they host Lock Haven at 1 p.m.
