Cal men, women have successful night on the court
The California (Pa.) men’s and women’s basketball teams were both winners Friday night with the men defeating Johnson C. Smith, 87-81, and the women downing Notre Dame (Ohio), 81-66.
The men held a 39-29 halftime lead in the Atlantic Region Conference Challenge at Indiana (Pa.), but Johnson C. Smith fought back in the final 20 minutes with a 52-48 edge, including a 32-15 run.
Richard Smith led the Vulcans (1-0) with a double-double, scoring a team-high 22 points while pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Jake Jakubec scored 18 points, Khalil Jabbie finished with 17, and Arman Marks added 10 for California.
Emilio Parks scored a game-high 25 points for Johnson C. Smith.
The California women built a 14-point lead (43-29) at halftime, and then held off Notre Dame for the season-opening win.
Emma Mahady led the Vulcans with 15 points. Seairra Barrett came off the bench to score 13 points. Irina Kukolj scored 11 points and Paige Wright added 10.
Martha Nagbe was the lone Notre Dame player in double figures with 19 points.
