Basketball

Cal women ranked No. 22

The California University of Pa. women’s basketball team is back in the top 25 for the first time in almost four years.

The Vulcans are ranked No. 22 in the latest USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll. Cal (4-1) owns victories over West Liberty and Edinboro, which were ranked 18th and sixth.

The Vulcans travel to Shepherd for a 7 p.m. game on Monday

Cal 2nd in Dixon Trophy

California University of Pa. is No. 2 among 18 schools in the first edition of the 2014-15 PSAC Dixon Trophy standings

The Dixon Trophy is awarded to the member institution whose athletic program earns the best overall finish in conference championships and/or regular-season play. During the course of the academic year, points are awarded based on an institution’s finish in the 23 conference sports.

The Vulcans averaged 12.94 overall points through eight fall sports. Women’s golf and volleyball each earned 18 points by winning their league titles, while women’s soccer (15), men’s cross country (13), football (11.5), men’s golf (11) and men’s soccer (10) also rang up double-digit points.

West Chester is No. 1 at 13.39.

California has won the Dixon Trophy twice.

Soccer

3 Vulcans honored

Three California University of Pa. women’s soccer players were named to the Daktronics All-Atlantic Region Teams.

Team captain Chelsea Crockett and Erin Hogan were named to the first team for the second year in a row, while Janelle McCann was placed in the second team.

Crockett scored 12 goals and had six assists as she tied McCann for the PSAC lead in points with 30. She led the league with six game-winning goals.

Hogan had 10 assists this season on her way to breaking the PSAC career record with 53.

McCann led the PSAC in goals with 14.

Volleyball

3 Cal players honored

Three members of the California University of Pa. women’s volleyball team were recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

The Vulcans’ Laurel Miller and Mary Lavery were chosen to the All-Atlantic Region Team while Miranda Fouzie received honorable mention.

Miller was named to the team for the second time. She led the PSAC with 476 kills. Lavery was second on the team with 2.19 kills per set and 94 blocks.

Fourzie ranked third in the country with 168 blocks.

Tennis

Vulcans ranked No. 12

The California University of Pa. women’s tennis team is 12th in the country and first in the Atlantic Region, according to the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.

The Vulcans’ Kiefer Shaw is ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 18 in the country, while teammate Ramona Czakon is second and 26th, respectively.

The doubles team of Jesse Burrell and Shaw is ranked ninth in the country.

Cal opens its season Feb. 14.
