Friend finishes first in Paul Short Run

California (Pa.) sophomore Julie Friend finished first Saturday in the White Race at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh.

The Uniontown graduate finished with a winning time of 21:27, around 12 seconds ahead of the next finisher. Friend has now finished first in all three races this fall.

The California women finished third as a team in the 35-team field with 180 points. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (N.Y.) finished first with 112 points, five points ahead of Mary Washington (Va.).

West Greene graduate Mikayla Sonneborn, who runs for Tulane, finished 138th overall in first 6K of the season with a time of 23:39.

The Vulcans’ Aaron Dinzeo finished second out of 350 runners in the men’s race with a time of 23:35, a mere seven seconds behind American International’s Mike Biwott.

Women’s soccer

California (Pa.) 0, Seton Hill 0, OT — The Griffins and Vulcans played to a scoreless tie in PSAC conference action at home.

California’s Meghan Javes turned aside five shots to preserve the tie. Seton Hill’s Carolin Edenhofner also made five saves.

The Vulcans are now 4-3-2 in the PSAC and 4-4-2 overall. Seton Hill is 5-2-2 in the conference and 5-2-2 overall.

Westminster 2, Washington & Jefferson 0 — The Presidents opened the PAC schedule with a shutout loss on the road at Westminster.

Krysten Opsatnik scored both Titan goals.

Southmoreland grad Hayley Skovira led W&J with a game-high four shots.

Grove City 3, Waynesburg 0 — The Lady Wolverines scored one goal in the first half and two more in the second half Friday night for a road PAC victory.

Abby Mathes, Kristin Thomas and Katherine Kouzelos scored for Grove City (1-0, 2-8-1).

Ciara Scott made eight saves for the Yellow Jackets (0-1-0, 3-4-2).

Men’s soccer

Waynesburg 2, Grove City 1, OT — Cody Lemke scored the game-winner in the 110th minute to lift the Yellow Jackets to a PAC overtime victory Friday night against the visiting Wolverines.

Seth Loew scored for Grove City in the first half and the Yellow Jackets’ Nick Brommer tied the opening conference match in the 79th minute.

Brandon Daughtry made 13 saves for Waynesburg (1-0-0, 5-4-3).

Women’s volleyball

California (Pa.) 3, Edinboro 0 — The first and third sets were close, but the Vulcans hung on for the sweep on the road in PSAC-West Conference action.

California won by the scores 25-23, 25-18, 25-23.

Laurel Miller led the Vulcans (7-2, 13-5) with nine kills. Mary Lavery added eight kills. Megan Litoborski finished with a team-high 17 digs, while Samantha Rudy had 15 digs. Litoborski also had a team-high 28 assists.

The Fighting Scots are now 6-3 in the conference and 13-5 overall.

Saint Vincent 3, Waynesburg 0; Bethany (W.Va.) 3, Waynesburg 0 — The Yellow Jackets lost both ends of a PAC doubleheader played at Saint Vincent.

The Lady Bearcats swept past Waynesburg by the scores, 25-14, 25-17, 25-18, while the Bison also won in three sets, 25-8, 25-13, 25-6.

Jessica Dorazio led the Yellow Jackets (1-8, 5-18) with 17 digs. Meghan Balogh was also in double figures with 12 digs. Delaney Denniston had a team-high 14 assists. Kourtney Skinner finished with eight kills.

Skinner had a team-high six kills against Bethany. Denniston finished with 14 assists. Dorazio led with 16 digs.
