Senior Madison Dupont has been recognized as the female representative for Jefferson-Morgan High School in the Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight series for the fall sports season.

Dupont is a four-year member of the Lady Rockets’ volleyball squad and is one of three captains on the 2014 team.

This season, Dupont has made the move from setter to outside hitter and she has flourished in the new role, as she is in the top five on the team in kills and blocks.

“I was a setter the last three years,” she said. “I made the move to outside hitter and I have really liked the move. It’s a different position and you have to approach each set differently as a hitter.”

Dupont is aware of the volleyball legacy of Jefferson-Morgan over the years and was immediately drawn into the sport at a young age.

“I have always loved to play volleyball from a very young age,” she said. “Both of my older cousins played and I remember coming to games and watching them play.”

For her most memorable athletic moment at J-M, Dupont points to the regular season finale last year and defeating rival Carmichaels in five sets for a trip to the playoffs.

“It was such a crazy atmosphere,” she said. “It’s always a big rivalry when Carmichaels and Jefferson play, but to have a playoff spot on the line only added to the intensity that night. We rallied for that win and we came together as a team.”

Dupont, who also plays on the softball team, currently has a 3.75 grade-point average in the classroom.

She plans to attend California University of Pennsylvania and major in physical therapy.

“Maddie has been great for our team,” J-M volleyball coach Lisa Olson said. “She started with our junior high program and she is still very active with our junior high program. We moved her around to hitter this year and she was very welcoming to the change. She just wanted what was best for the team and is always a team-first player.”

The Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight program is designed to recognize the top male and female student-athlete per high school sports’ season (fall, winter, spring) for the five Greene County schools.

The student-athletes are selected by the respective schools and submitted to the Greene County Messenger.
