Two bad tee shots costly for Rohanna
Two wayward tee shots in Sunday’s third and final round of the Prairie Band Casino & Resort Charity Classic unraveled a pretty good week of golf played by Rachel Rohanna.
Rohanna was 1-over for the round and even par for the tournament when “two bad swings” led to a couple lost balls, costing the Waynesburg Central graduate eight strokes. Rohanna started the round tied for 32nd place, but finished in 70th place with an 8-over 224. She won $285 for her efforts.
Olivia Jordan-Higgins finished first with a 12-under 204. She won $15,000 for the title.
Rohanna started the final round at Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta, Kansas, at 1-under. She bogeyed the second hole, but got the stroke back with a birdie on No. 4. Rohanna carded a bogey-6 on No. 6 and stood at even-par through seven holes.
Her tee shot on No. 8 went wide and landed in an area with high grass and trees. She opted to hit a provisional and hit a pretty good tee shot, so she figured her provisional was better off than her original shot and took the penalty.
“It wasn’t worth finding,” explained Rohanna.
When all was said and done, Rohanna walked off No. 8 with a triple bogey-7.
Another wayward, wide tee shot led to another scramble to get to the green. This time, Rohanna finished with a quintuple bogey-9.
She settled down with nine straight pars on the back nine.
“I played well except for the two shots. I was 8-over on those two holes (and 1-over on the other 16),” said Rohanna. “At that point, I made three bad swings, kinda in a row.”
Rohanna hit 44-of-54 greens in regulation (15 in the final round), but needed 103 putts (35 on Sunday).
“I couldn’t make any long putts for birdies. I just made short putts for my birdies,” said Rohanna.
Rohanna and the Symetra Tour remain in Kansas this week for the Garden City Charity Classic, running from Thursday to Saturday. The tour comes to a close the following week with the Symetra Tour Championship in Florida.
“I’d like to have two more good finishes going into the second stage of Q School,” said Rohanna.
