Diechert lifts LH to double win, boys split
Marisa Diechert ran under 20 minutes to lift Laurel Highlands to win over Elizabeth-Forward (15-50) and Thomas Jefferson (17-40) in Section 2-AAA girls cross country action Tuesday at Mingo Park.
All of LH’s points came from top 10 finishes from Diechert (19:44), Bristyn Yanick (2nd, 20:28), Emily Rohm (5th, 21:01), Alexis Kostelnik (7th, 22:10) and Kendra Kerr (10th, 23:19).
The girls team jumped out to a 2-0 section record in the section-opening meet, while the boys team began 1-1.
The LH boys team earned a split, beating Elizabeth-Forward, 21-39, and losing to Thomas Jefferson, 24-33.
Gregg Maruca was the top finisher for LH, coming in fourth in 17:49. Kolt Buckley finished seventh for LH in 18:26, while Jordan Eadie was ninth in 18:39. Nathan Smith was 13th in 19:19.

Ricky Brown and Saralynn Vance were individual winners to lead Brownsville to a cross country sweep over McGuffey and Frazier in Section 3-AA cross country action at Patsy Hillman Park.
Brownsville’s boys beat McGuffey, 26-31 and blanked Frazier, 15-50, while McGuffey also shut out Frazier, 15-50. Brownsville (2-5) is 2-0 in the section, McGuffey is 1-1 and Frazier is 0-2.
Brown broke the tape in 18:25 as the individual winner, while Frazier’s Nyoah Martney placed second in 18:38. Brownsville’s Ty and Riley Higinbotham came in after McGuffey’s Gage Nicolella (18:55) and finished fourth and fifth in 19:22 and 19:36, just ahead of teammate Josh Zahuranic, who crossed in 20:00.
Brownsville’s girls beat McGuffey, 15-47 and both teams shut out Frazier, 15-50. Brownsville (5-2) is 2-0 in the section, McGuffey is 1-1 and Frazier is 0-2.
Sarlynn Vance was one of three Vance sisters to finish in the top five. Her time was 21:05 and she was followed by teammate Kara Rohlf in 21:44, Jessica Vance in 21:55, Alie Seto in 22:14 and Adrienne Vance in 25:16.
McGuffey’s Allison Lindsey finished sixth in 26:03, a minute ahead of Brownsville’s Abby Vaughn (27:03). McGuffey’s Trini COle was eighth in 27:46, Brownsville’s Katelyn Victor was ninth in 28:28 and Abby Stagesein of McGuffey finished 10th in 28:57.
High school golf
Carmichaels golfer Liam Shea was medalist at the Section 8-AA boys golf qualifier at the Cedarbrook Gold Course.
Shea shot a 79 to finish first among six golfers who will tackle the Youghiogheny Country Club next Wednesday in the WPIAL Class AA championship.
Beth-Center’s Tyler Kuntz was next at 80, with Charleroi’s Mike Kendratik finishing third with an 82.
Shea’s Carmichaels teammate Jordan Bogucki was next with an 85, while Matt Amber of California and Waynesburg Central’s Joel Rohanna tied for fifth with 89s.

Joe Sherbondy followed up his qualifying round Monday with a medalist round Tuesday to lead Mount Pleasant to a 208-267 Section 2-AA victory over Geibel Catholic at Pleasant Valley Country Club.
Sherbondy shot a 5-over 39 to lead the Vikings. Greg Holzer finished with a 40. Jake Hostetler and Ray Hynek both shot 42. Steve Thompson closed out the scoring with a 45.
Bailey Miller was the low man for the Gators with a 49. Matt Emerson (52), John-Luke Tlumack (53), Anthony Lovat (54), and Vinny Delsignore (59) also counted in the final score for the home team.
Mount Pleasant improves to 6-2 in the section and 6-4 overall. Geibel Catholic slips to 1-7 in the section and 3-7 overall.

Jake Zemba was medalist on Tuesday for Derry in a 231-241 Section 2-AA match-up against visiting Frazier with a 4-over 40.
Derry’s Dan Bisi finished with a 41, while Nick Bell shot a 48. Teammates Kole Thomas and Dustin Boring each carded a 51.
Mark Dillon was low man for Frazier with a 10-over 46. Josh Miller (47), Annika Erdely (48), Blair Elliot (50), and Emily Marshall (50) also counted in the final score.

Southmoreland’s Zack Stefan shared medalist honors with GCC’s Olivia Zambrano, both shooting 40s, but the Scotties edged the Centurions, 220-222, in Section 2-AA golf action Tuesday at Timber Ridge.
Others scoring for the Scotties were Josh Redding, with a 43, Brock Grabiak with a 45 and Phil Lockhart and Josh McCue with matching 46s.
Southmoreland is 7-3 overall, 6-3 in section golf, while GCC dropped to 5-4, 5-2.
Girls volleyball
Frazier topped West Greene in Section 5-A volleyball Tuesday night, 3-0.
Frazier got seven kills from Annya Kossol and six more from Alexis Eicher in the 25-13, 25-9 and 25-7 win. Service point leaders for Frazier were Jamie Muccioli with 18 and Khristyne Barch with 15.
Frazier improved to 4-0, while West Greene fell to 0-5.

California battled through a 1-1 tie to win the last two sets in a 3-1 Section 5-A volleyball win at Jefferson-Morgan.
The Lady Trojans took the first set, 25-17, dropped the second, 25-8. They rallied for a 27-25 win inthe third set and settled in for a 25-22 win in the clincher.
Camryn Dugan paced JM (2-2) with 14 assists, while Morgan Simkovic had 11 kills and nine service points.

Carmichaels got 13 service points and seven kills from Lindsay Scott in a 3-0 Section 5-AA volleyball win over Mapletown.
Katelynn Schooley added 10 service points for the Mikes (2-2, 2-3), while Katie Mays (nine) and Emma Lewis (eight) led in kills.
Carmichaels won by game scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-11.

Laurel Highlands traveled to Kiski Area for a non-section volleyball match Tuesday and came home on the short end of a 3-0 sweep.
Kiski Area won by game scores of 25-21, 25-10 and 25-14. LH (1-4, 1-3) gets back into section play Thursday at Upper St. Clair.
Katelyn Kearns paced the LH attack with 12 assists and eight digs, while Hannah Basinger had five kills, Allison Hartsek added four kills and Morgan Wensing had three kills. Maddi Rice led with 10 digs and Amanda Filicky added four digs.

The Lady Colonials lost a Section 2-AAA volleyball game to visiting Trinity 3-2 on Tuesday.
Albert Gallatin lost the first two games 25-16 and 25-22, before winning the second two 25-20 and 25-22. Trinity won the final match 15-12.
Tyler Peebles had 5 aces, 13 digs, 17 assists and 7 kills for Albert Gallatin. Teammate Liberty Embacher had 13 digs, 10 kills and 2 blocks while Shaylyn Glancy had 2 aces, 4 digs and 6 assists.
The Lady Colonials (0-4, 0-8), travel to Peters Twp. on Thursday in Section 2-AAA play.
Boys soccer
Albert Gallatin got a goal from Hunter Barber, with an assist from Tanner Kuteck, but it wasn’t enough, as the Colonials lost a Section 1-AAA boys soccer game to Norwin, 8-1.

James Ewing and Bailey McIntyre teamed up on both goals as Geibel Catholic got a shutout 2-0 win over Charleroi in Section 4-A boys soccer action Tuesday.
Ewing scored at 24:29 of the first half on an assist from McIntyre and almost five minutes later, McIntyre scored on an assist from Ewing.
The Gators (7-0, 4-0) return home to section match against Bentworth Thursday.
Kyle Toth was hardly bothered in goal for the Gators, making three saves. Carson Caleb, conversely, was peppered and had 12 saves.
