Topeka nips Ice Miners after marathon shootout

By The 1 min read

Alex Blankenburg stopped an incredible 11 consecutive shots for the Keystone Ice Miners in a marathon shootout against Topeka at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minn., on Wednesday night.

Amazingly, the Road Runners’ Drew Vogler did him one better.

Will Scherer beat Blankenburg in the 12th round of the shootout and after Vogler stopped Keystone’s Garrett Hallford, Topeka had a hard-earned 3-2 victory.

The Road Runners of the South Division improve to 4-0, while the Ice Miners of the North Division fall to 1-1.

Dawson DiPietro scored in the first period and Beau Dommer scored in the second to give Topeka a 2-0 lead.

The Ice Miners battled back, though. Garrett Hallford beat Vogler at 16:03 of the second, and Scott Donahue tied it at 14:57 of the third.

Cameron Smith assisted on both Keystone goals.

Topeka managed the only shot in a scoreless overtime to set up the goalie battle in the shootout.

Blankenburg made 28 saves while Vogler made 26 , not including the shootout.

The Ice Miners have little time to rest as they’re back on the ice today at 10:30 a.m. when they take on the Austin Bruins (2-0) of the Central Division at the Ice Mine.
