Welsh continues TD Club run at number one
Anthony Welsh continues his run as top scorer after scoring 24 points on Friday to extend his lead to 24 points over Waynesburg Central senior John Glen Davis.
Welsh scored four of Beth-Center’s nine touchdowns last Friday in the Bulldogs’ 59-7 win against Carmichaels to run his season total to 78 points.
“We don’t like to focus too much on one player,” Bulldogs head coach, Ed Woods said. “He (Welsh) is a really good running back. When he gets the opportunity, he turns it into a touchdown, but it’s a team effort.”
Davis is up 15 points after the Raiders’ game against Mount Pleasant last week, giving him a total of 54 points so far this season and holding onto second place.
Waynesburg Central teammate Hunter Cenname takes the lone spot at third this week after scoring two touchdowns giving him a total of 48 points after week four.
“They did the same thing they do every week,” Raiders head coach, Russ Moore said of Davis and Cenname. “It’s not about who carries and who scores, they just run hard.”
Moore said he rotates the seniors, so one is usually on the sidelines resting while the other plays.
“They work out their own rotation based on who’s more tired and needs the break. I usually just trust them and let them rotate on their own. They’re both totally focused on how the team does as a whole.”
Davis ran for 175 yards on 22 carries in the Raiders’ loss against Mount Pleasant, while Cenname gained 155 yards on 19 carries.
Mapletown’s Adam Hein and Frazier’s Hunter Patterson didn’t score any new points last Friday, but still managed to remain in fourth place along with Beth-Center’s Nico Brown and Laurel Highlands’ Jimmy Pierce, all with 36 points.
Brown was in sixth place last week, moving up through the ranks with a touchdown in the Bulldogs’ win over Carmichaels.
“They’re both hard workers,” Woods said of Welsh and Brown.
Pierce scored two touchdowns in the Mustangs’ 39-14 win over rival Uniontown.
“He (Pierce) does a really good job,” Laurel Highlands head coach, Zach Just said. “He takes advantage when he gets the ball, he always finds a way to get into the endzone.”
Dominic Galderisi squeezed his way into 10th place on an extra point catch, giving him a two-point lead over the tie at 11th place with 26 points.
“Galderisi was out most of last season, he only played one and a half games, so it’s really exciting for him to make it this far already this season,” Just said. “He’s also given a huge lift to our offense having him healthy this year.”
Galderisi is followed by Belle Vernon’s Anthony Levis and Beth-Center’s Jason Stay in a two-way tie for 11th place with 24 points.
