Bennington breaks West Greene strikeout record in loss
Chartiers-Houston broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth inning and went on to defeat visiting West Greene, 7-1, in an early-season Section 1-A softball showdown on Thursday.
The Lady Pioneers’ Bailey Bennington took the loss but struck out seven in 5 1/3 innings to surpass Paige Moninger as the school’s all-time strikeout lead. Bennington, a junior, is now at 401.
Bennington also had two of West Greene’s three hits and scored its only run.
Madison Renner got the final five outs for the Lady Pioneers (5-2, 2-1).
Casey Craig was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Lady Bucs (6-1, 3-0) and Jessica Blumen also had two hits. Sabrina Stankos drove in the game’s first run with a triple and Kassie Kesneck doubled for C-H, which took over sole possession of first place with the win.
Winning pitcher Kaitlyn Dittrich allowed only a seventh-inning run in throwing a three-hitter with two strikeouts and one walk.
