Keystone, Soo scoreless in overtime
LEISENRING — Trevor Cope scored 3:46 into overtime to lift the Soo Eagles to a 1-0 win over the Keystone Ice Miners Saturday night at the Ice Mine.
The win gives the Eagles a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-5 NAHL playoff series. Soo hosts games 3 and 4 Friday and Saturday, with a potential Game 5 set for Monday, April 20, at the Ice Mine in Leisenring.
Sandis Zolmanis and Dan Weaver assisted on the only goal scored in Leisenring Saturday night.
The Ice Miners and Eagles played to a scoreless tie in regulation. The Ice Miners held the Eagles without a shot after Kelly O’Brien was called for tripping at 10:44 of the third period.
Keystone had a power play in both the first and second periods.
The Ice Miners held a 31-18 advantage in shots in regulation and controlled play for much of the game. But Soo became the aggressor in OT, out-shooting the Ice Miners, 3-1, in the extra session.
Nick Kossoff fended off the first 20 Soo shots on goal, but the 21st got past him and lifted Soo to the win.
Chad Catt stopped all 32 Keystone shots for the shutout that sends the Eagles home in command of the series.
Soo won Game 1 of the teams’ best-of-five NAHL playoff series Friday night, 6-1.
