West Greene rides 1st-inning explosion to 14-4 win over Maples
West Greene exploded for seven runs in the first inning and went to defeat visiting Mapletown, 14-4, in a six-inning Section 2-A baseball game on Friday.
The Pioneers (1-6, 1-3) sent 11 batters to the plate in their first at bat, combining five hits, two errors and a walk to produce seven runs.
The Maples plated two in the third and two more in the fourth around one more West Greene run to make it 8-4. The Pioneers roared back with five in the fifth and ended the game on the 10-run rule with a final run with none out in the sixth.
Winning pitcher Tyler Baker struck out eight and walked six in pitching into the fifth inning and hit a triple.
Cole Hamilton had two hits for West Greene and Dalton Eddy and Logan Vliet each smacked a double.
Matt Hein took the loss for the Maples (0-8, 0-6).
