CONNELLSVILLE — The saying goes that hitting is contagious. The visiting Penn-Trafford Lady Warriors had a hitting fever sweep through their lineup, collecting 17 hits on their way to 14-3 Section 1-AAAA win over the Connellsville Lady Falcons.

Connellsville (2-6, 3-6) had their chances getting runners on base but could not come up with the timely hit, stranding seven runners during the game.

“We left a lot of girls on base and that hurt us today,” Connellsville’s Felicia Domasky said. “We did get some hits, but couldn’t string enough of them together at the right time and left too many people out there.”

The Lady Warriors (5-3, 8-3) overcame a slow start and collected 15 of their 17 hits in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Hannah Dobrinick did most of the damage for P-T with four hits, two runs and two RBI. Teammate Megan Marasti added three hits, scoring two runs and driving in two.

Connellsville actually took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Jackie Cramer singled for one of her two hits on the day. Brooke Miller laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Cramer to second. Kelsi Burkholder followed with a double to drive in the run.

The Lady Warriors started to heat up in the top of the third, scoring three runs. Emma Nedley doubled and scored on a single from Marasti, who moved to second on the throw to the plate. She came around to score on a base hit from Dorbrinick. Breanna Ginther doubled to plate Dobrinick’s courtesy runner Maura Mallon.

They increased their lead to 6-1 with three more runs in the fourth. Marissa Bacco drew a walk. Cassie Surmacz hit a slow roller to third. Bacco beat the throw to second leaving two on. Winning pitcher Nicole Smith sacrificed the runners over a base. Nedley’s ground out to second scored Bacco. Sarah Koscho doubled driving in Surmacz. Marasti singled again driving in Koscho.

“We changed things around and put more hitting in our line up and it worked for us,” P-T’s Monica Cox said. “We need to work on some things defensively but we got the timely hitting today. We control our own destiny in the section in competing for a playoff berth. That’s something I don’t want to let go.”

Penn-Trafford blew the game open in the top of the fifth sending 11 people to the plate, getting eight runs on nine hits with Dobrinick getting two of those hits and driving in a run.

The Lady Falcons fought back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. With two on Victoria Culver doubled driving in both runs.

“We were missing our spots with our pitching the whole game and they took advantage of that,” Domasky said. “When Penn-Trafford started putting those runs together my girls got down on themselves a little bit. We made a couple of errors and that hurt us.”
