Palonder, Kalsey win PAC titles

Frazier graduate Sawyer Palonder and Waynesburg Central’s Marissa Kalsey won Presidents’ Athletic Conference Track & Field Championship titles last weekend at Grove City College.

The host team won both the men’s and women’s titles.

Kalsey, a junior at Westminster, and teammate Cassidy Shepherd, a Greensburg Salem graduate, both vaulted 3.40 meters (11-1¾), but Kalsey needed only two vaults to clear the height with no misses to win the tiebreaker.

A Waynesburg Central graduate, coach Bradi Rhoades’ female vaulters took five of the top six places.

Palonder, a junior at Saint Vincent, won the 5,000 in 15:50.56, two seconds ahead of the Yellow Jackets’ John Allison. Palonder almost doubled, but finished second in the 10,000 with a time of 32:56.87. Grove City’s Daniel Christiansen finished first in 32:46.82.

Waynesburg freshman and Uniontown graduate Julie Gerber placed second in both the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:03.38 and in the 10,000 in 39:22.20.

Washington & Jefferson senior Brook Burns, a Laurel Highlands graduate, won the high jump with a top effort of 4-11 (1.50 meters).

Geneva senior and Frazier grad Josh Guiser was fifth in the 200 and ran legs on the first-place finishes by the 400 and 1,600 relays. He missed the 100 finals by .02 seconds.

The Yellow Jackets’ Taylor Bombalski and Angie Marchetti finished first and third in the women’s 800. Marchetti came back to finish second in the 1,500. Elinore Loch was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Breanna Anderson was third in the triple jump. Addisen Knetzer won the shot put, was second in the discus and took fifth in the javelin.

Waynesburg’s Byrum Louco won the 400 hurdles, was fourth in the long jump and finished second in the 400. Brendan Keany was fourth in the 1,500. The Yellow Jackets’ John Allison finished first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, 13 seconds ahead of Saint Vincent’s Eric Porter, a Mount Pleasant graduate.

The Yellow Jackets’ Jason Propst was third in the high jump, while teammate Mitchell Kendra won the pole vault with a vault of 13-5¼. Brandon Valentine was third in the shot put with Waynesburg teammate and Uniontown graduate Jonathan Hager eighth.

The Yellow Jackets took third through fifth in the discus with Aniellio DeStefano, Travis Schubert and Hager earning the medals. Schubert added a second-place finish in the javelin.
