Long wait worth it for Waynesburg in win over Washington
It took almost a month to complete but it was well worth the wait for Waynesburg Central, which earned a 5-4 Section 2-AA softball win over Washington.
The Lady Raiders’ game against the Lady Prexies began on April 7 in Waynesburg, but was suspended by bad weather and resumed on Thursday in Washington in the fifth inning with the Lady Prexies leading 4-2.
It stayed the way until the bottom of the seventh when the Lady Raiders rallied for three runs to win it.
Ainissa Hopkins started the rally with a double, advanced to third and scored on Taylor Staley’s sacrifice fly. Tara Staley followed with a triple and scored on Sydney Hare’s single to tie it at 4-4. Tiffany Ross doubled, with Hare going to third, and Hannah Gibbons was given an intentional walk to set the stage for Gabby Rose, who’s walk-off single to center brought in Hare with the winning run.
Winning pitcher Taylor Staley struck out four and walked two in throwing a four-hitter. Emma Ricciuti added a double for Waynesburg (6-10, 5-6).
Losing pitcher Taylor Ellis walked two and struck out two and doubled. Maliyah Spencer also double for Washington (1-13, 0-12).
