Kang’s multi-hit road game streak impressive

By John Perrotto for The 2 min read

Jung Ho Kang did something that no Pirates hitter had done in six decades.

The rookie shortstop strung together six multi-hit road games in a row before the streak was stopped Thursday night at Cincinnati. The last Pirates player to have a streak that long was Gus Bell in 1950.

Kang then went 3-for-4 with three doubles on Friday night in a 5-4 win over the Reds.

On Tuesday night, Kang became the first rookie shortstop in the major leagues to a hit a go-ahead home run in the ninth inning this season as his solo shot off Minnesota closer Glen Perkins gave the Pirates an 8-7 win over the Twins at Minneapolis.

Going into Saturday Kang hit .408 (31-for-76) in his first 21 games after third baseman Josh Harrison went on the disabled list July 6 with eight doubles, two triples and three home runs.

First baseman Pedro Alvarez did not have a triple in 333 plate appearances entering the weekend, putting him on course to miss hitting for the season cycle — logging the 502 plate appearances necessary to qualify for the batting title without hitting at least one double, one triple and home run.

Harrison has not hit a triple in 326 plate appearances. However, he might have a hard time reaching the 502 threshold as he is recovering from thumb surgery and likely won’t return until September.

Seven Pirates have failed to reach a season cycle since PNC Park opened in 2001, all going without a triple: Aramis Ramirez (2001 and 2002), Kevin Young (2001), Jason Kendall (2004), Jose Castillo (2006), Adam LaRoche (2007), Neil Walker (2012) and Russell Martin (2013).

The franchise record for most plate appearances without a season cycle is 746, set by Hall of Famer Rabbit Maranville in 1922. While he did not hit a home run, he had 26 doubles and 15 triples.

Right-hander Tyler Glasgow, the Pirates’ top prospect, was promoted to Class AAA Indianapolis this past week. He went 5-3 with a 2.43 ERA in 12 starts for Class AA Altoona.
