Rohanna misses cut at W.B. Mason Championship
Rachel Rohanna had a birdie-free round Saturday, but, unfortunately, it wasn’t bogey-free as the Waynesburg Central graduate missed the cut at the inaugural W.B. Mason Championship.
Rohanna shot 4-over 75 on Thorny Lea Golf Club in the second round, finishing before the tournament was suspended because of rain. She also shot 75 in the opening round Friday.
“It was suspended for about an hour. The course weather alarm went off, but not the tour alarm when we were on No. 18,” said Rohanna. “We kept playing, but everyone left the course. Then the storm came in.”
The expected cut was to be at 4-over with golfers still on the course to complete their second round today. American Vicky Hurst holds the lead after the second round
“My timing was off a little bit. I hit no consistent shots at all,” said Rohanna.
Rohanna hit just 5-of-12 fairways in the second round and 7-of-12 on Friday.
“I usually miss the fairways by a couple yards. Today, it was more like 20 yards off the fairway,” explained Rohanna. “I hit my driver good on Friday. I’ve been hitting a draw for the past five months, but I hit push fades on Saturday.
“My putting was okay, but I was having problems from tee to green.”
Rohanna qualified that remark a little, adding, “My chipping was great. I got a lot of practice in.”
Rohanna had seven bogeys and three birdies in the opening round. She had consecutive bogeys on Nos. 3, 4 and 5 in the second round to play the front in 3-over 39.
She made the turn with a bogey on No. 10, and then finished out with eight straight pars.
Rohanna hit 10-of-18 greens in the second round after hitting eight in the first round. She needed 32 putts Saturday after 31 in the first round.
Rohanna played in a pro-am the previous week as the Symetra Tour traveled east to Massachusetts, so she really didn’t have a week off.
“Usually, I’m more mentally drained, but that’s not the problem. My mind is racing ahead,” said Rohanna. “My body seemed a little tired.”
The tour resumes in the first weekend of September with the Sioux Falls GreatLife Challenge. The four-round tournament has the largest purse on tour with $210,000.
“It’s like two tournaments,” Rohanna said of the purse. “I’ll definitely get some practice in. Maybe get coaching.”
