Fishing report
Anglers continued to report good fishing in waterways in Fayette and Somerset counties last week.
Trout and smallmouth bass are being caught in the Youghiogheny River downstream of the waterfall in Ohiopyle State Park, said Scott Gates of S&S Bait and Tackle in Ohiopyle.
One group of fishermen reported catching nine rainbow trout, three brown trout and a few smallmouth.
They used night crawlers and quarter-ounce Kastmaster spoons as bait.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) said browns and rainbows were caught in colder waters of the Yough around Ohiopyle and walleye were caught in deep pools of the river in Fayette County.
Anglers reported catching trout fishing from boats at night in Dunlap Creek Lake in Menallen Township, according to the PFBC.
Minnows and maggots has the trout biting at night, said Al Packan of Cap ‘N Al and Sons at the lake.
“There still aren’t many people fishing. Those who are fishing are catching fish,” Packan said. “Things are picking up as far as the fish being more active.”
Some bass, including one a girl caught a boat using a crank bait, have been caught and a few crappie and perch were also caught, he said.
Some nice trout were caught from the Youghiogheny River Lake dam outflow downstream to the all tackle trophy trout section in Confluence in Somerset County and some nice smallmouth bass also being caught in the all tackle trophy trout section below Ramcat Run, the PFBC said.
That section of the river was recently stocked with adult trout by the Chestnut Ridge Chapter of Trout Unlimited. The last trout stocking is scheduled for Sept. 4.
Bass were biting on shiners and crayfish baits in the Ramcat Run area along the Yough River, Gates said.
All sections of Meadow Run were giving up trout. Wax worms and small minnows worked well in the upper section, he said.
The PFBC said most streams are running low, but anglers are finding trout in deep, cool water areas.
Anglers caught walleye, bass, catfish and other fish in Youghiogheny River Lake.
One fisherman caught and released 18 walleye using Reef Runners and worm harnesses, Gates said.
He said he heard a few northern pike measuring more than 30 inches and a 52-inch musky were caught in the lake.
The PFBC said anglers reported catching mostly bass and channel catfish, and a few pike and walleye from boat and shore in the lake.
At High Point Lake in Somerset County, the perch bite remains active and some pike were caught on Johnson Silver Minnows and bass on shiners and plastic bait, Gates said.
An 11-year-old boy from Pittsburgh caught his first fish, a 13.5-inch smallmouth, on a jitterbug at night in High Point, the PFBC said. Catches of sunfish, chain pickerel and catfish were also reported.
Rainbow trout were caught throughout Laurel Hill Lake and at the spillway, according to the PFBC.
Gates rated the walleye fishing in Deep Creek Lake in Maryland as “fair to good” with a report of catches in weeds in shallow water. A few perch were also caught.
