Johnson in winter nationals

Uniontown’s Kaitlyn Johnson’s work towards competing in the 2016 U.S. Swimming and Diving Olympic trials continues today at the U.S. Winter Nationals at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

Johnson opens the three-day competition this morning in the preliminaries of the 50-meter freestyle, where she is seeded 30th with a time of 25.93 seconds.

She swims the 100 butterfly on Friday and closes Saturday in the 100 freestyle.

Johnson has qualified in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly for the Olympic trials, and is still looking to qualify in the 100 freestyle.

Harris in National Bowl Game

California University of Pa. senior quarterback James Harris had his final football season extended with his participation in the 6th annual National Bowl Game Sunday in Miami, Fla.

The all-star game, which is open to seniors at the NCAA FCS, Division II and Division III levels, will be played at Ocean Bank Field at FIU Stadium, which is the home field of the Florida International Panthers. The initial National Bowl Game was played in Allentown, Pa., in 2010 before moving to Miami in 2013.

Harris was recently selected as the PSAC West Offensive Player of the Year and repeated as an all-conference first-team selection. He led the conference and was eighth in NCAA Division II with a 158.1 passing efficiency. He was fourth in the PSAC with 3,000 yards passing, including four games of at least 300 yards. Harris threw for 24 touchdowns, the second-consecutive season he has done so.

Harris is third all-time in Cal history with 7,349 yards and the first quarterback with multiple 3,000-yard seasons.

Cal U trio honored

Junior defensive backs Jordan Bowman and Aaron Terry were named first-team selections on the Conference Commissioner’s Association all-region team. Both players now receive CCA All-America consideration.

Wide receiver Garry Brown earned second-team honors.

Bowman led the Vulcans and tied for the conference lead with a career-high five interceptions. He had 62 tackles (36 solo) and 6½ tackles for a loss. Bowman has 11 career interceptions and has scored at least one touchdown in each of the last three seasons.

Terry was second on the team with a career-high 70 tackles (48 solo). He also grabbed a career-high four interceptions.

Brown was second in the PSAC with 102.8 receiving yards per game, as well as with 1,028 receiving yards on 64 receptions. He had 11 touchdown receptions and five 100-yard games.

Volleyball

Lavery earns AVCA recognition

California University of Pa. senior Mary Lavery was selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association all-region team for the second consecutive season.

Lavery led the Vulcans with 277 kills and a career-high 2.69 kills per set. She had career highs in digs (207) and digs per set (2.01).

Lavery finished her career with 984 kills and 508 digs.
