Lady Pioneers improve to 3-0 with 69-43 win

The Lampe sisters combined for 30 points and Kaitlyn Rizor added 12 to lead West Greene to a 69-43 road victory in the Section 3-A opener at Fort Cherry.

McKenna Lampe scored a game-high 19 points, while her twin sister added 11.

The Lady Pioneers (1-0, 3-0) led 15-5 after the first quarter and then pulled away in the second quarter for a 38-9 lead.

The Lady Rangers had a slight 34-31 advantage in the second half.

Hannah Greene led Fort Cherry (0-1, 1-3) with 13 points. Shannon Relihan added 10.

Norwin 60, Connellsville 14 – The visiting Lady Knights scored all the points they would need in the opening eight minutes Thursday night as Norwin cruised to a 60-14 victory in the Section 1-AAAA opener at Connellsville.

Norwin (1-0, 4-0) led 22-2 after the first quarter and 37-4 at halftime. The Lady Knights’ lead improved to 53-8 after three quarters.

Norwin’s Alayna Gribble scored a game-high 22 points. Dominique Petach added 10.

The Lady Falcons slip to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the section.

Ringgold 50, Belle Vernon 37 – The Belle Vernon girls couldn’t hold onto a first-quarter lead Thursday night, losing on the road to Ringgold, 50-37, in the Section 4-AAA opener.

The Lady Leopards (0-1, 1-3) led 15-8 after the first quarter, but Ringgold rallied for a 21-18 lead at halftime. The Lady Rams then outscored Belle Vernon in the second half, 29-19.

Caitlyn Trombley led the Lady Leopards with 13 points. Keelsey Green added 11.

Bailey Cooper scored a game-high 19 points for the Lady Rams. Ashley Brisco added 16.

Frazier 54, Bentworth 48 – The Frazier girls trailed at halftime Thursday night, but rallied for 23 points in the third quarter and the Lady Commodores held on for a 54-48 Section 4-AA home victory against Bentworth.

The Lady Bearcats led 16-10 after the first quarter and 25-23 at halftime. Frazier (1-0, 3-2) then doubled its score for a 46-33 lead after three quarters.

Bentworth’s rally fell short in the fourth quarter with a 15-8 advantage.

Brooke Poling led the Lady Commodores with 20 points. Lauren Mastowski finished with 10. Hannah Fell had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Heather Chester scored a game-high 27 points for the Lady Bearcats.

Mapletown 57, Avella 54 – The Mapletown girls trailed after the first quarter Thursday night, but rallied in the middle two quarter for a tight 57-54 Section 3-A victory over visiting Avella.

The Lady Eagles led 10-8 after the first quarter, but the Lady Maples (1-0, 1-4) pushed into a 24-19 halftime lead.

Mapletown extended its lead to 45-34 after three quarters and then held off a fourth-quarter push by Avella, 20-12, to hold on for the win.

Kelsi Smith, who grabbed 12 rebounds, made 1-of-2 free throws with nine seconds remaining to clinch the win.

Mapletown’s Hannah Duesenberry led all scorers with 24 points.

Grace Lengauer led the Lady Eagles with 22. Raneusha Brown added 10.

Greensburg Salem 45, Uniontown 16 – The Uniontown girls trailed by just four points after the first quarter Thursday night, but Greensburg Salem pulled away with an 18-2 second quarter on its way to a 45-16 Section 3-AAA home victory.

The teams tied in the third quarter, 11-11, but Greensburg Salem finished with a 9-0 fourth quarter advantage.

Yolanda Jackson led the Lady Raiders (0-1, 1-2) with six points.

Megan Kallock was the top scorer for the Lady Lions (1-0, 1-4) with 15 points.

Charleroi 50, Beth-Center 35 – Charleroi pulled away for a 23-4 lead after the first quarter Thursday night, and the Lady Cougars cruised to a 50-35 Section 4-AA road victory at Beth-Center.

The Lady Cougars (1-0, 4-0) led 36-12 at halftime and 43-30 after three quarters.

Maria Claybaugh led Charleroi with 23 points, including 16 in the first half. Kaitlyn Riley added 11.

Kinlee Whited tied for scoring honors for the Lady Bulldogs (0-1, 2-2) with 23 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter.

Washington 47, Waynesburg Central 26 – Washington outscored Waynesburg Central in each quarter Thursday night on its way to a 47-26 Section 4-AA road victory.

The Prexies led 16-6, 26-13 and 35-18 at the quarter breaks.

The undermanned Lady Raiders (0-1, 0-2) with two starters and a reserve out with injuries were led by Celine Monica’s double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds. Kirsten Garber added eight points.

Tajah led the Prexies (1-0, 4-1) with 17 points. Mikayla Malpony added 12.

Brownsville 54, West Mifflin 43 – The Brownsville girls rallied in the middle two quarters Thursday night to open the Section 3-AAA schedule with a 54-43 victory at West Mifflin.

The Lady Titans led 17-14 after the first quarter, but Brownsville outscored the home team in the next 16 minutes, 35-14, to take control of the game.

West Mifflin’s rally fell short in the fourth quarter with a 12-5 advantage.

Maris Seto led the Lady Falcons (1-0, 4-0) with a game-high 26 points, including 10-of-13 from the foul line, and eight rebounds. Keke McCrae added 14 points, including four 3-pointers.

Miranda Ferguson led West Mifflin with 24 points.

Swimming

Laurel Highlands (girls) 88, Greensburg Salem 82; Laurel Highlands (boys) 83, Greensburg Salem 43 – The Fillies had to fight to the final event in the pool, while the Mustangs had a little easier time Thursday night as Laurel Highlands swim team went on the road for non-section road at Greensburg YMCA against Greensburg Salem.

The Laurel Highlands boys won 83-43, while the girls toughed out an 88-82 victory against the Lady Golden Lions.

Freshman Gwyneth Hamilton had a big night for the Fillies with first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle, and swimming a leg on the victorious 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Fellow freshman Miranda Yauger won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and was also on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Kristen Bane won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, and swam the breaststroke leg on the 200 medley relay. Rachel Roscoe took first in the 100 freestyle and was the opening leg of the victorious 400 freestyle relay.

The Lions’ Maris Leonard won the 50 freestyle and swam the opening leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay.

The Mustangs won all three relays. Cameron Lizza, Cole Doborish, Luke Edmonds and Logan Knoyer won the 200 medley relay. Jonathon Lewis, Joseph Stout, Jacob Johnson and Brandon Thomas finished first in the 200 freestyle relay. Dylan Rice, Lizza, Lewis and Johnson won the 400 freestyle relay.

Thomas (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Knoyer (200 IM, 100 breaststroke), Dorobish (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke), Edmonds (100 butterfly), and Johnson (100 freestyle) also won individual events.

Both the LH boys and girls improve to 3-0 overall.

Connellsville (girls) 115, Mount Pleasant 59; Connellsville (boys) 110, Mount Pleasant 62 – The Connellsville swim team had a solid, all-around performance against visiting Mount Pleasant Thursday night with the boys winning, 115-59, and the Lady Falcons completing the sweep with a 110-62 victory.

Canon-McMillam (girls) 100, Uniontown 78; Canon-McMillan (boys) 99, Uniontown 68 – The Uniontown boys and girls swim teams had a tough road trip Thursday night after being swept by Canon-McMillan in a non-section meet.

The Big Macs defeated the Uniontown boys, 99-68, while the Canon-McMillan girls handed the Lady Raiders a 100-78 loss.

Rachel VanNosdeln (200 freestyle, 2:13.58), Elizabeth Klingensmith (100 butterfly, 1:01.53), Alexandra Meadows (500 freestyle, 6:25.02), and Molly Rabon (100 breaststroke, 1:30.23) all had individual first-place finishes for Uniontown. VanNosdeln, Meadows, Valerie Grimes and Klingensmith won the 400 freestyle in 4:06.03.

The Red Raiders’ Jonathan DesVarro won the diving competition with 95.30 points. Caleb Patton finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:29.62) and Cameron Kutek won the 100 breaststroke (1:41.09). Riley Gilleland, Evan Klatt, Chase Bowen and Jonathan Sharp finished first in the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:52.34.

Both the boys and girls slip to 0-2 overall.
