Tyler Majernik hit a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded Friday night to lift Steel Valley to a 75-73 double overtime victory in Section 4-AAA action against visiting Laurel Highlands.

The Mustangs (1-1, 2-2) led by one point with four seconds left in overtime when the ball worked around to Majernik, not Steel Valley’s first option, and he nailed the game-winning shot.

The Mustangs’ Jake Swartz tied the game in regulation at 59-all with a free throw late in the fourth quarter.

The two teams played to a 6-6 tie in the first overtime.

“It was a tough one,” said Laurel Highlands coach Rick Hauger. “We started to lose players (to fouls) in overtime.

“I don’t think (Majernik) was the first option. The shot (by Majernik), we ended getting pressure on him. The effort was there.”

Hauger added, “We need discipline in some areas. We only made 50 percent in free throws.”

Steel Valley (1-0, 4-0) led 21-16 after the first quarter and 35-28 at halftime. The Mustangs (1-1, 2-2) pulled into the lead after the third quarter, 49-46.

Bryce Laskey led the Mustangs with 19 points. Swartz finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Cameron Holt, Chayton Burchick and Hudson Novak all finished with 11 points.

Swartz fouled out in the fourth quarter and Burchick and Novak both fouled out in the second overtime.

Jamire Fletcher led Steel Valley with 29 points. Derian Smith added 26.
