Wiltrout qualifies for US Olympic trials

It seemed to be a mere formality, but Madison Wiltrout will be competing in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials at historic Hayward Field on July 1-10, 2016, in Eugene, Oregon.
The USATF released the competition standards Thursday morning for all track and field events. The standard for the women’s javelin is 54 meters (177-2) with the performance window between May 1, 2015 through June 26, 2016. The competition is set for 24 throwers in two rounds.
The Connellsville junior easily met the standard with her record-breaking throw of 185-8 (56.62 meters) in the WPIAL Class AAA Central Regional Qualifier at Norwin High School on May 7.
Wiltrout actually had several other throws top the standard. Her gold medal-winning throw in the WPIAL Championships (181 feet), as well as her final throw in the preliminary round of 179 feet, topped the standard.
Wiltrout’s gold medal throw on a very windy day in the PIAA Championships of 182-8 also surpassed the mark.
Her national record throw ranks 82nd in the world this year and ranked eighth in the country through June.
Wiltrout injured her elbow at the state meet, leading to surgery to repair the elbow. She is expected to be ready for the 2016 season next spring.
