Kellar leaves Cal for Lenoir-Rhyne
Mike Kellar has resigned as football coach at California (Pa.) University to accept the same position at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Lenoir-Rhyne, like Cal U, is an NCAA Division II program, but plays in the South Atlantic Conference.
Kellar posted a record of 31-12 in four years as head coach at Cal. He served as associate head coach in 2011 and had previously served as offensive coordinator at Cal from 2004-2008 before becoming head coach at Concord.
“Coach Kellar was the unanimous selection of our search committee,” said Wayne B. Powell, president of Lenoir-Rhyne. “LR has one of the top football programs in the country, and we have attracted a head coach who can take us to an even higher level both on and off the field.”
“I am very excited about joining the LR family,” Kellar said at his introductory press conference. “I have always said Lenoir-Rhyne has the best game day atmosphere in which I have coached. My goal is to win a national championship, and I believe Dr. Powell and the people of LR have the same goal.”
During his tenure as head coach at Cal, the Vulcans fashioned a 20-9 record in the PSAC. He also helped 43 Vulcans earn All-PSAC West honors (28 first team) and produced a PSAC West offensive and defensive Player of the Year.
Cal U will immediately begin a national search for a replacement.
