Bailey Miller plays basketball and golfs at Geibel Catholic High School. He also maintains a 3.5 GPA and plans to play basketball in college, on his way to a degree in business management or physical therapy.

“I like basketball better than golf and I would like to play basketball in college,” Miller said. “I’m not sure where I’m going to college, but basketball may help me determine that. I don’t want to go to some big school that wasn’t looking at me as a basketball player. But if I would be able to get a scholarship at a Division II school to play basketball, that would help me decide.”

Miller was selected as Geibel Catholic’s winter sports male representative in the Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight program. He is a son of Samuel and Lori Miller of Charleroi. His older brother, Joshua Miller, 25, is the manager of a Belle Vernon restaurant and his sister, Frankee Miller, is a nursing student at WCCC.

“I have always wanted to own my own business, like a restaurant or something cool like that,” said Miller, who noted that his favorite class is anatomy. “But if I would pursue physical therapy, I would like to carry it through and become a doctor of physical therapy.”

As for sports, Miller has golfed longer, but has enjoyed basketball more.

“I’ve played basketball here all the way through,” Miller said. “I am a center. I’ve played basketball really since my fourth grade year. All of my friends had been playing. I didn’t really like it at first. My dad signed me up for it in fourth grade and I played the season and realized that I loved the sport and wanted to continue playing it.”

His family went to Charleroi High School, but he followed up after completing elementary school at St. Sebastian School in Belle Vernon.

“I didn’t really have an interest in going to Charleroi. I have a lot of friends in Charleroi, but I had a lot of friends who were coming here. Plus, I liked the school and it had a good basketball program. It was just a good choice for me. I don’t regret it at all. I like it here.”

“I started golf at a younger age than I started basketball,” Miller said. “My father got me into golf. He taught me probably everything about golf. I always wanted to golf in high school just because it seemed like it would be a really fun thing to do. It’s really a side sport because basketball is my main sport.”

His most memorable sports moment occurred last basketball season, when the Gators qualified for the WPIAL Class A playoffs and got to play a game on Miller’s hometown court at Charleroi High School.

“We made the playoffs for the first time in a few years and, for me, it was really special because I was a big part of us making the playoffs. Plus the game was in my hometown, in front of all of my friends and family for the first round of the playoffs. It was pretty special.”

He also made All-County as a junior last year and would like to make All-Section (the Gators play in Section 3-A) this year.
