Mustangs hold off Albert Gallatin, 87-74

The Laurel Highlands boys scored at least 20 points in every quarter Wednesday night as the host Mustangs defeated Albert Gallatin, 87-74 in the final game of the Laurel Highlands Christmas Clash.

Laurel Highlands (6-5) led 24-17 after the first quarter, 44-33 at halftime and 67-50 at the end of the third quarter. The Colonials (6-5) held a slight 24-20 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Tavian Mozie poured in a game-high 30 points for the Colonials. Tanner Kutek added 26.

Jake Swartz led a quartet of Mustangs in double figures with 27 points. Cameron Holt (16), Chayton Burchick (15), and Hudson Novak (14) were also in double digits.

University (W.Va.) 67, Uniontown 45 – The Uniontown boys fell behind in the first quarter and University (W.Va.) High made the advantage stand Wednesday night for a 67-45 victory in the final night of the Laurel Highlands Christmas Clash.

University led 18-9 after the first quarter and 39-20 at halftime. The Red Raiders (4-4) chipped a little off the deficit with a 16-12 advantage in the third quarter, but University finished off the win with a 15-9 fourth quarter.

Phillip Mosely led Uniontown with a game-high 17 points. Malaky Howard added 10.

Geoff Hamperain scored 14 points for University. Holton Summers (12) and Ethan Ridgeway (10) were also in double figures.

Penn Hills 67, Connellsville 26 – The Falcons scored only one point in the first quarter Wednesday night as host Penn Hills cruised to a 67-26 victory over Connellsville in the final game of the Penn Hills County Challenge.

The Indians led 41-7 at halftime and 55-17 after three quarters. Penn Hills also carried the play in the fourth quarter, 12-9.

Alek Detwiler was the lone player for Connellsville (4-7) in double figures with 12 points.

Sherron Schifino led the Indians (7-4) with a game-high 18 points. Chavar Williamson added 13.

Southmoreland 66, Elizabeth-Forward 53, OT – The Southmoreland boys needed overtime, but the extra effort was worth the trouble as the Scotties defeated Elizabeth-Forward, 66-53, on the final night of the Charleroi Federal Holiday Tournament.

The Warriors led 23-10 after the first quarter and 36-23 at halftime. The lead remained at 13 into the fourth quarter when the Scotties (7-4) rallied to tie the game in regulation with a 19-6 advantage in the final eight minutes.

Southmoreland then outscored the Warriors (3-9) in overtime, 15-2.

Brandon Stone scored a game-high 29 points for the Scotties. Doug Leighty finished with 13 and Zak Leighty added 10.

Trey Mitchell led the Warriors with 18 points. Connor Paoletti scored 16 and Jacob Jenkins added 12.

Girls basketball

Brentwood 50, Carmichaels 18 – Carmichaels fell behind early and wasn’t able to recover for 50-18 loss to Brentwood Wednesday night in the final night of the Lady Trojan Holiday Tournament hosted by California High School.

The Lady Spartans (7-3) led 15-4, 26-11 and 45-16 at the quarter breaks.

Molly Huffman, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored a game-high 14 points for Brentwood.

Gina Ranieiri led the Lady Mikes (4-7) with six points.

Carlynton 48, California 42 – California led at halftime, but Carlynton rallied in the third quarter Wednesday night for a 48-42 victory in the title game of the Lady Trojan Holiday Tournament.

The host Lady Trojans (6-4) led 9-4 after the first quarter and 20-15 at halftime.

The Lady Cougars (8-2) pushed into the lead on the strength of an 18-9 advantage in the third quarter and then held on in the fourth quarter for the come-from-behind victory.

Carlynton’s Ashleigh Wilson earned a spot on the all-tournament team after scoring 15 points. Teammate Diamond Thomas was named the tournament MVP.

The Lady Trojan’s Bailey Vig, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored a game-high 16 points.

In earlier games, Charleroi built a big lead early on its way to a 66-24 victory over rival Monessen.

Kaitlyn Riley, who was named to the all-tournament team, poured in a game-high 25 points. Maria Claybaugh added 21.

Natalia Holmes led the Lady Greyhounds with 11.

Sewickley Academy led 20-8 after the first quarter and never looked back for a 52-30 win over South Allegheny.

All-tournament selection Maddy Casale scored 23 for the Lady Panthers. Olivia Ryder added 13 points to the winning effort.

Hanna Elder led the Lady Gladiators with 13 points.
