Lady Commodores run away from AG, 55-29
Trailing by five early in the first quarter, the Frazier girls basketball team rallied in the second quarter with a 19-4 scoring margin en route to a 55-29 victory over Albert Gallatin Wednesday morning at the Laurel Highlands Christmas Clash.
Frazier’s Brooke Poling tallied a game-high 24 points, while Jovanna Isaac chipped in with 10. The Lady Commodores (5-5) had nine players reach the scoresheet in the win.
“We had to move the ball in order to establish a strong offense,” Frazier coach Ken Poling said. “We were a little sloppy the first couple of minutes, but we finally clicked with some ball movement and got everyone involved. When we play good defense that helps our offense.”
The Lady Colonials (2-8) struggled to maintain a consistent offense, but were led by Anaejah Harris (14) and Monica Saunders (10).
“We played well in the first quarter, but we lost our discipline the rest of the way,” Albert Gallatin coach Ellen Hildebrand said. “We took contested shots and made some wild passes that they intercepted. We have to be stronger on offense and be able to trust each other on that end.”
AG opened the contest with a 7-2 run, but Frazier quickly responded with a 13-5 rally to recapture the lead. The Lady Commodores led 15-12 at the end of one.
Frazier began the second quarter with an 11-1 run and sandwiched around three points from Albert Gallatin, the Lady Commodores ended the quarter with eight straight points for a 34-16 lead at half.
“We have a couple of athletes on our team,” coach Poling said. “They play unselfish and we are always looking for the next pass. It’s a rollercoaster for us as a young team this year. One minute we are up and the next we are down. We just have to be able to ride out all of that emotions.”
Both teams struggled on offense in the third quarter, as Frazier held an 8-2 scoring edge.
The Lady Colonials collected six unanswered points to start the final eight minutes, but the Lady Commodores rebounded with a 13-5 run to secure the tournament triumph.
“We competed today,” Hildebrand said. “We have come a long way since last year and we have been in a lot of competitive games this season. I’m really proud of my girls and we are getting better every night. We just have to continue to work and be able to learn more systems.”
