Commission releases results of Virgin Run survey
Virgin Run Lake is a 33 acre impoundment located in just west of Connellsville.
The lake is easily accessed by taking Route 201 west out of Connellsville and then taking a right onto Lake Road, which dead ends into Virgin Run Road. After making a left onto Virgin Run Road the lake is just up the road.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) owns and manages the waterway for fishing and boating. There is ample parking and a paved boat launch. The use of motorized boats is restricted to electric motors.
Besides the use of boats, there is a large amount of cleared shoreline that provides additional opportunities for recreational fishing.
The lake is stocked with catchable trout and is managed as an Approved Trout Water Open To Year Round Fishing.
All other species besides trout are managed under Statewide Regulations.
Area 8 PFBC Biologists sampled fish populations at Virgin Run Lake on May 14th through the 16th. The lake was sampled to assess fish abundance using two different methods. Largemouth Bass were targeted on the 14th where the team performed Night Flatbottom Boat Electrofishing (NTBEF), along the entire shoreline. The sample was split into three contiguous shoreline runs.
Panfish were targeted using six trap nets set over two days. The 2013 sampling of Virgin Run Lake yielded 11 species and 523 individuals. All gamefish species were counted, measured, weighed, and immediately released. The combined data from the three-day sampling is listed in Table 1 below.
