Joey Sofo scored the only goal of the shootout in the fifth round and Alex Blankenburg stopped Cam Beck to seal the victory as the Keystone Ice Miners rallied to win at Johnstown, 4-3, on Friday night.

The Ice Miners rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to force what was a scoreless overtime.

Blankenburg stopped 24 shots in regulation and OT before stonewalling the Tomahawks on their five shootout attempts.

It was the first of three straight games against Johnstown for Keystone.

The Tomahawks out-shoot the Ice Miners 14-4 in the first period in taking a 2-0 lead on goals by Zach Zech and Trevor Recktenwald.

The Ice Miners cut the lead in half when Jon Hall scored on a wraparound at 1:08. Matt Jones assisted on the goal.

The visitors pulled even less that two minutes later on Michael Maiden’s goal on an assist from Sofo.

Johnstown went in front again on a controversial goal by Recktenwald in the final second of the period. The shot got behind Blankenburg just as time was expiring and the officials ruled it a goal after convening.

Undaunted, Keystone battled back to knot the score again, 3-3, when Brendan Jaquay put in the rebound of Keenan Sabatini’s shot for a power-play goal. It was Jaquay’s eighth goal of the season and fifth in the five games.

The Ice Miners will be in action again next Friday in Johnstown, then host the Tomahawks on Saturday, Jan. 17.
