Campbell leads Red Raiders over Rams

Joe Campbell led the way with 29 points as Uniontown beat Ringgold, 73-46, in Section 4-AAA boys basketball action Tuesday night at Ringgold.

The Red Raiders improved to 16-2 overall and 10-1 in section games heading into Friday’s key home game with West Mifflin.

Uniontown stormed out to a 39-18 lead by halftime and built it by three points in each of the last two quarters.

DeAundre Winfrey added 15 points for Uniontown, while Jeremy Perkins and Lyric Ellis scored 11 each for the Red Raiders.

West Mifflin 67, Laurel Highlands 65 — Laurel Highlands jumped out to an early lead, staged a furious comeback, but fell just short in a 67-65 setback to first-place West Mifflin in Tuesday’s Section 4-AAA showdown.

Down 55-44 entering the fourth quarter, the Mustangs (6-5, 11-8) outscored the Titans (10-1, 15-2), 21-12, in the final frame.

LH tied the game with 3:15 remaining when David Rusko made two free throws to tie the game at 59-59.

West Mifflin took a 61-59 lead on two foul shots by Josh Long.

The Titans held a 65-63 lead with 49 seconds remaining when the Mustangs stole the ball and Hudson Novak made two pressure free throws to tie the game at 65-65 with 38 seconds left.

West Mifflin held for the last shot, and with about eight seconds remaining penetrated the ball for the final shot. However, a controversial hand check put the Titans’ Karlyn Garner at the line. Garner made both shots and the Mustangs could not get the final shot off.

LH came out of the gates strong with a 6-0 run that prompted the Titans to call time. After the timeout at 6:38 of the first, the Mustangs scored again for an 8-0 lead at 5:49.

West Mifflin pulled all five of its starters after the 6-0 early deficit.

Jake Swartz led the Mustangs in scoring with 21 points. He also pulled down 13 rebounds. Teammate Tyler Eadie had 13, and Rusko had 12 to go along with eight rebounds.

Novak chipped with 10 points for LH.

West Mifflin’s Antonio Hill shared scoring honors with Swartz in putting in 21. Hill made five of the Titans’ 11 three-pointers. He also pulled down seven rebounds.

Albert Gallatin 53, Kiski Area 45 — Albert Gallatin won its first section game in quite a while with Tuesday’s 53-45 win at Kiski Area in Section 1-AAAA boys basketball action.

Michael Lewis and David Knox scored 15 points each for the Colonials (2-13, 1-8) and Tavian Mozie added 11. It was AG’s first section win since the current seniors were in middle school.

Charleroi 60, Carmichaels 44 — Carmichaels ran out to a 24-13 lead in the first quarter, but Charleroi settled down and methodically took control of this 60-44 Section 4-AA boys basketball game at Charleroi.

The Cougars comeback was fueled by defense, as the Mikes managed only five in the second quarter, eight in the third and seven in the fourth.

Nick Mundell paced Carmichaels (5-12, 1-7) with 17 points and Jacob Wamsley added 10.

Jefferson-Morgan 92, Avella 55 — Rece Henneman scored 43 to lead Jefferson-Morgan past Avella, 92-55, on Tuesday night at Avella.

The Rockets’ jumped out to a 24-16 lead after one, and extended their halftime lead to 57-30 after outscoring the Eagles, 33-14, in the second quarter.

J-M outscored Avella, 21-19, in the third, and 14-6 in the final quarter.

Austin Clark had 23 for the Rockets and Jalen Torres chipped in with 10.

Brownsville 76, Bentworth 53 — Brownsville earned a 76-53 win at Bentworth Tuesday night, but no further details were available at press time.

The Falcons are 13-5 overall and 7-2 in Section 4-AA, heading into Friday’s home showdown with first-place Charleroi.

Waynesburg Central 64, Beth-Center 58 -Waynesburg Central placed three players in double figures in a 64-58 win at Beth-Center in Section 4-AA boys basketball Tuesday night.

Jason Zelany led the way with 24, Mitch Warmen added 17 and Don Sarra flipped in 14 for the playoff-bound Raiders (12-6, 7-3).

Brady McDonnell’s 21 led Beth-Center (8-9, 1-7), while Ryan Beyer added 13.

Girls basketball

Beth-Center 53, Waynesburg Central 30 — Beth-Center held Waynesburg Central to two first-quarter points and 17 through three quarters on its way to a 53-30 Section 4-AA win Tuesday night.

Anna Bartman paced BC with 16 points and Kinlee Whited added 13. Celine Monica led the Lady Raiders with 11.

Playoff-bound Beth-Center improved to 9-4 overall and6-3 in section games, while Waynesburg Central fell to 2-13, 0-10.

Indiana 38, Uniontown 36 — Uniontown put up a gallant effort in a two-point, 38-36, Section 3-AAA girls basketball loss at first-place Indiana Tuesday night.

The Lady Raiders gave it all they had, but just came up short. Uniontown trailed by one point going into the fourth quarter, but ended up losing by two.

Khai Harris led Uniontown (9-9, 5-6) with 14 points, while Juanita Harris added 12 and Arielle Winfrey scored 10.

Indiana (17-1, 11-0) got 16 from Lucy Bujdos and 11 from Jessica Stever.

Hempfield 60, Connellsville 33 — Hempfield locked up a playoff berth with a 60-33 win over Connellsville in Section 1-AAAA Tuesday night.

Lexi Irwin set the pace with 17 points for Hempfield, while Leah Knizner added 14 and Michelle scored 13. Connellsville got 14 from Madison Wiltrout.

The Lady Spartans are 12-6 overall and 6-3 in section games, while Connellsville fell to 6-14, 3-7 and has been eliminated from playoff contention.

California 60, West Greene 12 — California put this one away with a 29-0 lead through the first quarter and cruised past West Greene, 60-12 in Section 3-A girls basketball action Tuesday night.

The Lady Trojans got 16 points from Lyndsey Huhn and 11 from Bailey Vig. Sarah Courtwright paced West Greene with five.

California improved to 18-1 overall and 11-0 in section games, while West Greene fell to 0-19, 0-11.

Jefferson-Morgan 57, Avella 22 — Jefferson-Morgan scored enough in the first quarter to beat Avella and came out with a 57-22 Section 3-A win Tuesday night.

The Lady Rockets scored 25 in the first quarter to take a 25-6 lead that became 37-9 by halftime. Playoff-bound JM improved to 16-1 overall and 10-1 in section at the expense of Avella (4-14, 2-9).

Nikki Venick ped the way with 15 for JM, while Morgan Simkovic and Erin Confortini added 11 each. Kodi Georgetti paced Avella with six.

South Park 53, Brownsville 42 — Brownsville stayed with South Park throughout, but couldn’t pull ahead in a 53-42 loss Tuesday in Section 4-AAA girls basketball.

Alyssa Greer led South Park (10-8, 6-3) with 15 points and Natalie Clidesdale added 13. Maris Seto paced the Lady Falcons (6-11, 0-10) with 18 and Celina Smith added 11.
