By The 2 min read

Both the Laurel Highlands boys and girls had their fair share of first-place finishes Thursday night, but visiting Hempfield was just too deep to sweep the Section 1-AAA meet.

The Spartans defeated Laurel Highlands, 95-79, while the Hempfield girls beat the Fillies, 98-80.

Rachel Roscoe had a strong night in the pool, winning the 50 freestyle (26.58) and 100 freestyle (58.19). Lexi Kostelnik (200 freestyle, 2:02.04), Emily Yarish (200 IM, 2:18.33), and Lauren Schiffbauer (100 breaststroke, 50.99) all had WPIAL qualifying times in their first-place finishes.

Yarish, Roscoe, Kristen Bane and Kostelnik had a qualifying time of 1:48.60 in winning the 200 freestyle relay, while Bane, Claire Prigg, Mackenzie Robatin and Kostelnik hit the time with their first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:19.07.

Kostelnik also hit the qualifying time in the 500 freestyle in her second-place finish, as did Yarish in the 100 breaststroke.

The girls are now 4-6-1 overall.

Brandon Thomas (200 freestyle, 1:53.97; 100 breaststroke, 1:06.91) and Logan Knoyer (50 freestyle, 22.69; 100 freestyle, 49.64) both won two individual events in WPIAL qualifying times. Knoyer, Daniel Keith, Theo Skoric and Thomas won the 200 freestyle relay in a qualifying time of 1:34.75. Knoyer, Lizza, Skoric and Thomas qualified in the 400 freestyle relay with their winning time of 3:34.97.

Keith (200 IM), Skoric (50 freestyle), and Lizza (100 backstroke) also finished in WPIAL qualifying times, although they did not win the individual event.

The Mustangs are now 6-5 overall.

Albert Gallatin’s Caleb Dankle qualified for the 100 backstroke with his time of 59.44 seconds.
