Rohanna makes the cut at Danielle Downey Classic

By Jim Downey jdowney@heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

Rachel Rohanna’s first nine holes of Friday’s second round of the inaugural Toyota Danielle Downey Classic mirrored the first round with two early birdies and seven pars.

The back nine on Brook-Lea Country Club wasn’t as steady, but in the end the Waynesburg Central graduate finished the round with a 1-under 71 and advance to today’s third round with a two-day total of 1-under 143.

American Annie Park holds the lead after two rounds with a 9-under 135.

Rohanna had birdies on Nos. 2 and 4 on the front nine, to go with seven pars to go out in 2-under 34.

The back nine was all over the card for Rohanna after she opened with a bogey-6 on No. 10. She got the stroke back with a birdie-4 on the next hole, but slid to even par for the round with consecutive bogeys.

Rohanna then seemingly hit a switch with three straight birdies to go to 3-under, but No. 17 got away from her with a bogey-6. She scored her only par on the back on No. 18 to come back in 1-over 37.

“I took it back even par and then had a string of birdies,” explained Rohanna. “No. 17 is a really difficult hole. The first putt was faster than I thought and ended up with a 3-putt.”

Rohanna was pleased with the fact she carded six birdies, including four on the back nine, in the second round.

“I was making birdies, which is a good thing,” said Rohanna. “The greens I hit in regulation, I made the putts. If I did not hit the green, I was not getting up and down.

“I felt I was putting very well. I love the greens. I’m going to rely on my putter through the weekend.”

A double bogey is never a good thing, especially when it comes on the heels of three straight birdies.

“(The double bogey) came right after I bring (her score) to 3-under. It was pretty frustrating,” said Rohanna.

Rohanna hit 8-of-14 fairways and 14-of-18 greens in regulation. She needed 32 putts, compared to 31 in the first round.

Rohanna is tied in 35th place at the midpoint of the Symetra Tour stop in Rochester, N.Y., and will tee off at 9:20 this morning.

“At least I finished under par,” said Rohanna. “I’ve had some bad breaks and lies. I need to keep it in the fairway.”
