Fayette County Open ready for 27th year
Local golfers will tee it up for the 27th time next week to decide who is the best in the county in the Fayette County Open.
The four-day competition begins on Thursday, July 30, at Uniontown Country Club. The Open moves to Pleasant Valley Country Club on Friday. Springdale Golf Club will host the third round on Saturday, Aug. 1, with Duck Hollow Golf Club hosting the final round on Sunday.
“Duck Hollow, Uniontown and Pleasant Valley have been in all 27 years,” said tournament co-director Bernie Wydo.
The two-day senior event will be held at Springdale and Duck Hollow.
Cost is $175 for the four-day tournament and $80 for the seniors’ two-day tournament.
The 26th edition closed with Jeremy Enslen winning another title and Steve Superick taking the senior crown, plus a few lingering questions.
“There were some things we weren’t sure about. We weren’t sure what Uniontown Country Club was going to do,” said Wydo, Albert Gallatin’s long-time golf coach. “Uniontown came back and we decided to use the same format. No one is giving us any input.
“We want to know who the best golfer is.”
Wydo expects the regular field to be around 40 golfers and about 15-18 seniors.
“Some high school golfers have contacted me about playing. They want get into competition to see what the can do. It’s a barometer to see where they are with the season starting in a couple weeks,” explained Wydo. “Some of the guys who have been playing are getting older and losing the desire to compete.
“We’re trying to pull some younger golfers in.”
Wydo added he would like to see a female golfer or two added to the field, that is expected to include defending champion Enslen, former champions John Kingora and Santino Marchitello, and high school/college golfers Harison Laskey, Logan Levander and Jon Ek.
Anyone interested in playing is asked to call Wydo at (724) 437-7464.
