New car give-away set for Wednesday
It has been quite an amazing year for scholar/athletes, both in the classroom and on the various fields of play.
It is about to come to a head, but it’s not graduation day that we are thinking about.
No, graduation day already came and went for one area high school, as Geibel Catholic held its commencement last Tuesday.
This special presentation is the one that comes with a shiny new prize for one lucky and deserving 2015 high school graduate.
On Wednesday, one lucky graduating senior will turn the key on a 2015 Chevrolet Spark, the engine will turn over and Centennial Chevrolet’s newest grand prize winner will be crowned.
It’s the culmination of Year Three of the partnership between Centennial Chevrolet and the Herald-Standard. We have featured close to 100 area high school athletes during the soon-to-be completed school year.
For the first time, all scholar/athlete profiles were accompanied by feature stories, along with the popular baker’s dozen questionnaire and a color photo of each honoree. There were so many stories to tell that we ran out of time, kind of. Several profiles will run in the coming weeks.
All selections were made by the school’s administration, which also helped us whittle down the number of honorees to a more manageable number.
Each of the 16 schools in the Herald-Standard circulation area selected its top male and top female scholar/athlete per sports season (fall, winter and spring). From those three males and three females, each school subsequently selected its top male and top female scholar/athlete.
That’s how we came up with the following 32 scholar/athletes, the ones we like to refer to as the Elite 32. They represent the top male and top female scholar/athlete for the entire year from their respective schools.
The Elite 32 will gather at the Stone House Restaurant and Country Inn on Route 40 in Farmington at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday for a reception and awards program.
All 32 will receive a prize package, while the top three males and top three females will be further honored. They will receive more gifts and one of six keys to the new car.
One by one, the lucky six will take his or her turn behind the wheel until a winner is determined. The program will be broadcast live at heraldstandard.com.
