Robert Rohanna had a solid round Thursday on the opening day of the Lexus Peru Open presented by Scotiabank, finishing with a 5-under 67.

The Waynesburg Central graduate had a bogey-free day on Los Inkas Golf Club with five birdies and 12 pars to close the first round tied for seventh place.

“It’s been awhile since I went bogey free, so that’s nice,” Rohanna said via Facebook Messenger.

Mexico’s Rodolfo Cazaubon and American Nathan Lashley are tied for the first round lead at 8-under 64. The low 55 scores (and ties) advance to Saturday’s third round.

Rohanna started on the back nine with back-to-back pars and then carded his first birdie of the round. He then birdied two of the next four holes and closed his front nine with back-to-back pars to go out in 3-under 33.

He started the back nine as he did the front nine with two pars and a birdie to move to 4-under for the round. Rohanna scored his final birdie on his 15th hole to play the back nine in 2-under 34 for a 5-under total.

Rohanna felt he hit the ball as well as he has this season.

“I played pretty solid today. I hit lots of quality shots. I hit 17 greens,” said Rohanna. “Yes, I putted well. I didn’t make a ton of putts, but my lines were great. I was just a little off on the speeds. Maybe tomorrow they will all fall.”

The tournament in Lima, Peru, is the final one of what has been a trying season for Rohanna.

“Yes I am,” replied Rohanna when asked if he was trying to end the season on a high note. “I’m just trying to get out there and make some good strides forward. It’s been such a long year and I’m finally starting to hit the ball better. I just wish it was the beginning and not the end.”

Rohanna said the weather won’t be a factor and reminds him of playing in Greene County.

“The weather is weird here in Lima. The morning is foggy and like a constant mist. Then, it just kinda gets nice every hour, but the sun never shines. It’s always cloudy. It never rains here. It’s just the mist. They get like three inches of rain a year or something,” said Rohanna, adding with a laugh, “It reminds me of Waynesburg.”
