Cal men post first victory of season
The California (Pa.) men’s basketball team held a slim 27-22 halftime lead Saturday afternoon, but the Vulcan defense clamped down in the second half for a 70-47 PSAC victory against visiting Lock Haven.
The Vulcans (1-1, 1-3) controlled the second half, outscoring the visitors, 43-25, in the final 20 minutes.
Drew Cook led California with a game-high 12 points. Nate Bellhy finished with 11 points, and Richard Smith grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Tracy Peal led Lock Haven (0-2, 2-2) with 11 points. Shawn Church added 10.
Alma 101, Waynesburg 57 — Alma held a 30-point halftime lead and cruised through the final 20 minutes for the victory at the Great Lakes Classic.
Alma (1-2) led 50-20 at halftime and outscored the Yellow Jackets in the second half, 51-37.
Jon Knab led Waynesburg (0-3) with 13 points. D.J. Ritchie finished with 12 and B.J. Durham added 10.
Alma’s Chase Fairchild led all scorers with a game-high 16 points. D.J. Beckman (15), Scott Nikodemski (13), and Jason Beckman (11) were also in double figures. Alma shot well from the field, making 36-of-64 field goals, 14-of-28 3-point attempts, and 15-of-17 free throw attempts.
Women’s basketball
California (Pa.) 67, Lock Haven 48 — The trio of Miki Glenn, Seairra Barrett and Precious Martin accounted for 39 points to lead the Vulcans to a PSAC victory against visiting Lock Haven.
Glenn led the way for California (2-0, 3-1), tying for game-scoring honors with 15 points. Barrett scored 14 and Martin added 10. Shatara Parsons grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
Lysa Mealing had a double-double for Lock Haven (0-2, 1-3) with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Mount Union 87, Waynesburg 57 — The Purple Raiders led at the end of every quarter as the host team defeated the Yellow Jackets in the title game.
Heather Davis scored the first 10 points for the Yellow Jackets (1-2) for an early 10-5 lead, but Mount Union closed the first quarter on a 23-4 run for a 28-14 advantage.
Mount Union (3-0) carried the play over the final three quarters for the victory.
Davis scored 21 points, including 15 from 3-point goals, earning her a spot on the all-tournament team. Davis averaged 17½ points and 5½ rebounds in the two games of the tournament.
