Rohanna moves up the leaderboard

Rachel Rohanna said after the completion of the second round Friday she wanted to shoot 8-under over the final two rounds of the Symetra Tour Championship.

Well, for a little while, it looked as though the Waynesburg Central graduate would accomplish that goal in the third round alone before she settled in with a 3-under 69.

Rohanna is in a 6-way tie for 13th place at 6-under 210. Catherine O’Donnell holds the lead after the third round at 13-under 203.

After opening with three consecutive pars, Rohanna scored her first birdie of the third round on the par-4 fourth hole.

She went one better on the next hole with an eagle-3.

“I hit a really good drive right of my target, which was good because it gave me an extra 20 yards. I felt pretty confident with the 6-iron in my hands and made a 25-footer for eagle,” said Rohanna.

“That shot me to 3-under (for the round).”

Rohanna parred out the front nine to go out in 3-under 36.

She opened the back with a birdie-3 on No. 10 to go to 7-under for her round and slip into the top 10.

Rohanna followed with three pars in a row before she ran into trouble on Nos. 14 and 15.

“(No. 14) is a par-3. I thought I hit a perfect tee shot, but it was four yards short of the green. I decided to putt instead of chip and left it short. I two-putted for bogey,” said Rohanna. “On No. 15, I hit into the rough with my drive. The ball settled down in the rough and I hit my next shot into the bunker. I had a difficult shot out of the bunker and took bogey.”

As she had in the previous two rounds, Rohanna birdied No. 18 to finish the back in even-par 36.

She hit 11-of-18 greens in regulation and 9-of-14 fairways. Rohanna needed just 27 putts, as compared to 32 in each of the first two rounds.

The season that started back in February now basically boils down to 18 holes.

“I think for lot of the girls it’s almost a feeling of relief,” Rohanna said of the long season.

But, Rohanna is still taking the “one shot at a time” mentality.

“There’s still a low number for me out there if I get it all to click,” said Rohanna, who had two rounds of 5-under in last year’s tournament on the LPGA International, Jones course in Daytona Beach, Fla. “I’m just need to keep doing what I’ve been doing.”

Rohanna said she was going to approach the weekend rounds as though she was sitting at even-par, believing she could shoot 8-under in the final 36 holes.

“I might try to think I’m a 5-over and try to get back to even,” added Rohanna.
