Jackets, Vulcans earn football wins
Waynesburg kept Thiel winless in PAC football action with a 28-15 win over the Bobcats Saturday at Wiley Stadium.
Jake Dougherty passed for 296 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Yellow Jackets. Willie Leavell scored twice, catching a Dougherty pass and running for the first score of the game for Waynesburg. Leavell ran for 58 yards and caught passes worth another 34 yards.
Kevin Barnes led the Jackets with 138 receiving yards and a score, while Tim Cooper caught Dougherty’s other TD pass. Jerry Lawman sparked Waynesburg’s ground game with 79 yards rushing.
Waynesburg improved to 3-5 overall, 2-4 in PAC games, while Thiel fell to 1-6, 0-5. Waynesburg built a 28-3 lead and held off a Thiel rally for the win.
California 42, Clarion 28: The Vulcans gave up almost 500 yards of offense, but still handed Clarion its first loss of the season, 42-28, in PSAC football action Saturday at Adamson Stadium.
California surrendered 495 offensive yards to the Golden Eagles, but came up with six interceptions, with Cameron Tarver returning one 50 yards for a score.
Cal got 101 yards and two touchdowns from John Franklin III, while Jimmy Wheeler also found the end zone while rushing for 93 yards. James Harris passed for 189 yards and two scores, both going to Garry Brown, who had 77 yards receiving in the game.
Cal opened a 42-14 lead through three quarters before Clarion scored twice in the fourth quarter to tighten the final score.
Cal improve to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in conference games, while Clarion fell to 7-1, 4-1.
