Connellsville closes on winning note

By The 2 min read

Braden Hone rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-clinching 77-yarder in the final minute, as Connellsville closed its season on a winning note, dashing visiting Altoona’s WPIAL playoff hopes in the process, 29-21, in a Foothills Conference game on Friday night.

Steven White and Hone scored first-quarter rushing touchdowns of 4 and 2 yards to give the Falcons (2-7, 2-6) an early 14-0 lead with Corey Fogle booting both extra points.

The Mountain Lions’ Josh Russo scored on a 6-yard run to make it 14-7 at halftime.

Altoona surged ahead in the third quarter, tying it on Ryan Shope’s 56-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Good, then taking a 21-14 lead on Nick Hayden’s 2-yard TD run.

Coach Dave McDonald’s Falcons answered late in the third quarter with Lucas White’s 7-yard touchdown run, and then took the lead when the snap was bobbled on the extra-point attempt and Hone turned the botched play into a two-point conversion run to put the hosts up 22-21.

Altoona (3-6, 2-6) fumbled twice in Connellsville territory in the fourth quarter with Hone and Jules Stash recovering for the Falcons.

Hone then put the game away with his long TD run one play after he moved the sticks with a clutch third-down run.
