Greyhounds edge Maples
Dylan Rush ran 207 yards, including touchdown of 39 and 43 yards, but it wasn’t enough as visiting Monessen rode a 200-yard, four-TD performance from Javon Youngblood to a 35-28 non-conference win over the Maples on Friday night.
The Maples (3-6) jumped out to a 14-0 lead when Dustin Lemley threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Matt Hein in the first quarter and Rush scored on his 39-yard run in the second quarter.
The Greyhounds (5-4) responded later in the second quarter as Youngblood scored on runs of five and four yards to even the score at halftime, 14-14.
Youngblood’s third touchdown, a four-yard run, put Monessen ahead in the third quarter.
The teams traded touchdowns the rest of the way.
Rush’s 43-yard run was countered by Jaden Altomare’s one-yard TD run as Monessen took a 29-20 lead after three quarters.
The Maples pulled within one on Matt Hein’s six-yard touchdown run and Lemley’s two-point conversion pass.
Youngblood’s final TD, a three-yard run with 3:10 left, put Monessen up by seven and the Greyhounds’ defense hung on from there.
Rush finished the season with 1,430 rushing yards.
