Cal baseball sweeps doubleheader

Mick Fennell had a monster performance for the Vulcans Friday, leading the California (Pa.) baseball team to a doubleheader sweep, 9-7 and 13-0, at Gannon in PSAC-West Conference action.

Fennell went 3-for-4, including a triple, with two RBI and a run scored in the first game. Danny McGrath and Kristian Webb both had a pair of hits in the first game, with McGrath and Eric Fairman both driving in two runs. One of Webb’s hits was a solo home run.

Jack Dennis (4-2) went 6.1 innings for the win, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

Matt Carter got the final out of the game to earn his fourth save of the season.

Fennell (4-1) was the winning pitcher in the nightcap, allowing five hits in seven innings with six strikeouts and one walk. He hit his seventh home run, going 3-for-5 with six RBI and two runs scored.

Connellsville’s Garrett Brooks went 2-for-3 in the second game with two runs scored. He had a run scored and RBI in the first game.

The Vulcans improve to 8-2 in the conference and 15-11 overall, while the Golden Knights go to 8-2 and 20-7.

Waynesburg 11, La Roche 1; La Roche 4, Waynesburg 2 — The Yellow Jackets snapped a 13-game losing streak with a victory in the first game of the doubleheader played at La Roche.

Brian Resnik earned the win, allowing just one unearned run on five hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Waynesburg (2-15) scored the first run in the second game, but the Redhawks scored three runs in the bottom of the inning for the lead.

Luke Carter took the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits.

College softball

California (Pa.) 8, Edinboro 0; California (Pa.) 3, Edinboro 1 — Alex Sagl and Connellsville grad Meghan Uher pitched the Vulcans to a PSAC-West Conference doubleheader sweep on Friday against the visiting Fighting Scots.

Sagl (9-1) scattered two hits in the first game, while striking out 13 and walking three.

Aided by six Edinboro errors, the Vulcans made the most of their five hits. Hailey Wilson and Megan Jahoda both drove in two runs.

Uher (5-0) scattered six hitsi including Brooke Callaghan’s solo home run, in the second game, striking out three and walking one.

Taylor Robblee smacked solo home run for the Vulcans. Emily Price and Lindsay Reicoff both had a single in the victory.

California improves to 6-0 in the conference and 19-1 overall. Edinboro slips to 2-4 and 7-11.
