Frazier tops Monessen in 11
It took 11 innings on a cold, wintry afternoon Friday, but Frazier earned a 5-4 win at Monessen in Section 2-A softball action.
The win keeps Frazier undefeated at 4-0 overall and 3-0 in section games, while Monessen fell to 5-2 overall and lost its first section game after two wins.
The Lady Commodores had only five hits in the game, but four of them went for doubles. In fact, both winning pitcher Kara Mastowski and losing pitcher Dana Vatakis had doubles. Other two-baggers, all for Frazier, came from Lauren Mastowski, Kayla Matway and Zoe Hotz.
Both pitchers went the distance, with Mastowski giving up eight hits, with five strikeouts and four walks. Vatakis struck out nine and walked two.
The teams were tied, 2-2, through seven innings and each plated a run in the 10th inning. Frazier scored a pair in the top of the 11th, but Monessen could muster only one, giving the Lady Commodores the hard-fought win.
