Lady Rockets stay hot, sweep Avella

By The 2 min read

Nikki Venick had five hits and Jefferson-Morgan ran its winning streak to four as it swept a doubleheader against visiting Avella, 11-0 and 11-1, both in five innings, in Section 1-A softball action on Wednesday at Chris Dugan Memorial Field.

Lady Rockets pitchers Camryn Dugan and Autumn Tedrow combined on a ho-hitter in the first game. Dugan went the first two innings, striking out two, and Tedrow tossed the final three frames, striking out eight. Neither walked a batter.

Venick was 3 for 3 in the opener, including a pair of doubles, Morgan Simkovic hit a two-run homer and Krista McCartney delivered a two-run single.

Sami Dunkle took the loss. The Lady Eagles (0-4, 0-3) managed only three base runners as Brooke Burchianti, Emily Pollock and Paige Allen each reached on an error.

Venick went 2 for 4 in the second game with a lead-off homer in the first to give J-M a 1-0 lead. Tedrow stayed on the mound and tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks.

The Lady Rockets (4-3, 2-0) added five more runs in the second and never looked back. Simkovic’s second two-run homer of the day made it 10-0 in the fourth.

Avella avoided back-to-back no-hitters when losing pitcher Emily Pollock singled in the fourth, and back-to-back shutouts when Paige Allen reached base on an error in the fifth and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Losing pitcher Pollock struck out four and walked one.
